Just got a new Dell Laptop with Windows 8 on it. Does anybody know how to shut it down? Do you just use the power on button? On the older versions you would go through the shutdown button but can't find anything like it on this one.

Go ahead and give me the grieve.... probably deserve it, but would like to know how to turn this thing off.:W:

Jabber try this:
place your finger to the right of your touchpad and swipe left onto the touchpad and select Settings.Select Power, and then select Shut down.

Your Default Setting for the Power Button is probably set to sleep, so you will need to change it to Shutdown. Steps

Thank you katqanna. That worked. Both of them.

I am beginning to believe you on that 325

Jabber, glad that helped. I have been building my own computers for nearly 18 years now, doing all my own tech work and web design. Microsoft, without fail, likes to put out a decent operating system, followed by a crap one. Millenium/2000, Vista and 8 are the crap versions. I will never use 8.

Unbelievable that you can't buy a computer with Win 7 anymore. The fact that they are selling computers with Win 8 downgradable to Win 7 is a sign!

I was afraid of Windows 8. Fortunately when I just bought my new computer, it was still an option to get Windows 7.

You can get laptops or other computers that only have Windows 7 on it. This is a link from Tiger Direct, one of the companies I buy my hardware from. I popped in the criteria as Windows 7 and these are the models that are available for laptops. Newegg has the the same thing.

For my PC, because of all the video editing, which chews up space, I bought a terabyte sata drive to add to my others. I had to finally bite it and buy windows 7 pro.I had been holding out because I have thousands of dollars in XP software on my computer. But Pro lets you use XP software, so I dont have to replace it all. Tiger Direct and Newegg sell OEM versions of Windows 7 and 7 Pro that you can use on your PC's or laptops.

I got windows 8 on 2 new computers since it was the most recent and would be around the longest. With Windows 8, Microsoft has tried to turn a computer into an ipad (my wife has an ipad, and it is good only for checking facebook, IMO). After having a mac, I am not a big fan of apple. IMO Apple does not sell computers, they sell luxury goods, whose main purpose is to impress the owner and other people.

Cant stand Windows on my new laptop either. The mouse pad annoys the crap out of me. Every time I swipe it, it takes me to a different page.

Once you go Mac, you never go back...
... said no real engineer ever :D

I didn't want to buy a Mac for my daughter since none of us would know how to help her. Windows 8 turned out to be just as bad. On the other hand next year she'll be able to teach us how to use it.

Windows 8 $ucks. and 8.1 is slightly less $ucky. But then I am unfortunately(slightly) old school, and a creature of habit.Seems like just when I get something figured out they go and change it.This amuses my wife until she gets sick of bailing me out.

Hem, I feel your pain. Had to buy a new TV. Wife still has to fire up the DVD player so we can watch a movie. The end....

Boom.

I like my ipad and my iphone, and use both extensively for work but they have very limited applications. Windows 8 is clunky and doesn't work as an OS for a desktop or laptop but should be just fine for the tablets.

I do like some of the layout of 8, but the ability to only run one app at a time makes the features I do like almost moot. I can accomplish most of the same things I want to to with multiple windows open on the desktop. I've not gone back to 7 just out of sheer laziness though.
