Chukar Info

I started hunting chukar in 1967 or 68. We always ran shorthairs. Our most frequent area was near Richland, but thats all burned. We had great hunting in the Owyhee as well. Haul our boat down there, camp along the resivoir. We would get in the boat run a little and shut down and drift on the breeze. When we heard birds we would go after them. We were all runners. I ran the mile in the low 4s in high school my younger brother finished 5th in the ncaa in cross country. That didn’t hurt us.
I think my favorite place to hunt chukar is down on the east flank of Steens Mountain. The town of Fields is a good starting place.
Your first chukar trip is for adventure ever trip after is for revenge.
I told my buddy in Nevada that took me chukar hunting it was like elk hunting for birds. Only harder. mtmuley

That’s my only regret with this one from 20-odd years ago. Wish I had bought a lightly used Wingmaster years ago instead of this Express that was new at the time. I’ve made up my mind that both of my kids will get a 20ga Wingmaster for their first shotgun after a youth model 870 Express. If they decide to find something else from there that’s on them. Sorry for the derail OP! Back to chukars!
Not so fast, back to wingmasters. When my grandfather lost his eye sight he gave my brother and I each a few guns. I lost rock, paper, scissors and my brother got the 870 wingmaster. I've stolen it a few times, but he always manages to get it back. A while ago, after bar hopping around coastal Maine, brother and I tried to sober up by walking around the 24hr L.L. Bean. They had a 870 wingmaster for a reasonable price on the used rack. I didn't grab it, but I've always regretted that.

Id love to have both an 1100 and 870 in the safe. I ended up with my grandad's sxs .410, old stevens. Love it, but damn if my ass still isn't chapped about the wingmaster.

When we lived in Nevada this Montana boy had no idea how to hunt chukars. I tried and hunted hard. For a long time. Nothing. My wife thought I had a girlfriend. Then I met a local that had grown up in the area. He had a Brittany that was awesome. Game changer. I miss it. Maybe someday again. mtmuley
My wife would agree, we've found hunting out of state for birds with my dog is far cheaper than any NR big game tag or a girlfriend. Although I'd take a few NR big game tags now then.

Another vote for @El Jason . He’s an A hole, and his dogs are clueless. He’s arrogant though and he may be willing to try to prove me wrong. 😂
His dogs might have forgotten more about chukars than I'll ever know. And as long as he doesn't request ipa anything, I'd cough up a few beers for lesson or two.

I can help you out with the 1100.

Fair enough! you need a Wingmaster! My Express has been my only shotgun for 99% of what I’ve done with a shotgun, bought it when I was 14 or 15, and used it around our family’s dairy on thousands of trash birds as well as all my hunting too. Hard to beat an 870 and I hope there’s no finish left on it by the time my kids are fighting over it.

@Irrelevant I’ve hunted 3-4 days with young dogs. Finn is coming 9 and by day three is hunting about 20 yards in front of me. Charli will still be tearing it up on day three.

Obviously, conditioning and time of year play into this, as well as where we are hunting. Certain areas, I won’t be good for more than three days of hunting.
