Changes to MT Upland Season - Resident Priority Takes Effect This Year

Well the share of NR harvest of MD by percentage has almost increased 60% in the last 20 years.

So - i think its safe to say if the mule deer are declining and residents are getting and smaller share, its time to do something for R.
Most R would say on a survey things are fine they want know change other then to get 7 tags again instead of 3

Most residents will complain about non residents and how they need to cut their tags. Seriously most won’t even entertain the idea of season changes until non residents take the first hit. Right or wrong that’s the truth

I’m in agreement with them on this part Cut our tags . Or at very least make NR tags regional . But it’s gonna take both R and NR to make real change .

Theyre harvesting less bucks than 2006. 🤔
These days most residents I know now eat elk and rarely kill a mule deer, myself included. That has changed in the last 20 years.

The last several years I have had about as many opportunities to kill a bull elk as I have had to kill a buck mule deer in the areas that I hunt in SW MT.

Do the residents realize that NRs don’t have a say in the matter?

Their complaint is more at FWP allowing so many NRs with the resource like it is than it is at the actual NR

Their frustration should be aimed at the Legislature . Other than the quota increases and decreases for antlerless tags the Legislature is who passed increases to ES tags, ,not FWP

Yet there’s zero fight from FWP and every year they tell us everything great. Go to their Facebook pages and watch their mule deer videos they are putting out. We are in the golden years. FWP fought the mule deer doe tags not being valid on public land too. I’d say alot of frustration should be aimed at fwp

What have resident numbers looked like in that same timeframe?
That will take more time. G&F surveys res hunters on which units they hunted. So one hunter could hunt multiple units within a region. So the information gives a misleading view of how many resident hunters hunted a given region. This was the best that Chat cold come up with over the last 6 years. I think that took about 50 gallons of water to process.

I think this does possibly point to resident hunters doing a decent job of regulating themselves on where they hunt given the conditions of the herds and the many options they have to them. I am confident that had the G&F left NR G&H gen license quotas at 2,000 each year for the last 20 years, every one of them would have been sold.
