Catch All Fishing Thread

Had a free afternoon today, decided to hit up the infamous Lake Up the Road. The waters around where I live have been a bit goofy all summer - got some long fish stories - so it's nice to have a fairly normal experience in my own back yard. Alas, the call of staging October browns is growing louder, and I will drive 35 minutes to go catch them at some point this weekend. But today was more of a 10 minute drive kind of a day.

Another free sunny October afternoon - I thought about chasing pheasants, but my dad said he wanted to go get into some trout today. I think he's just trying to get out of the walking exercises he's supposed to be doing. Anyway, we got into some good rainbows, brought a couple home for some smoke action. They're starting to color up, so this is probably the last round of rainbows from the Lake Up the Road for the season.

Went out a few weeks ago to chase walleye. Wanted to troll around weed edges, but I’m tired of constantly losing bait to small perch and fouling up on random clumps away from the main edge. Came up with this- weighted swim bait hook, 4” paddletail behind a bottom bouncer. The wire bouncer clears some of the weeds, and the rest don’t catch on the hook.

Hookup ratio was maybe 50%. Had a few bites where the rod would shake several times and they’d let go- might need to hold it in my hand instead of just a rod holder. Cold, cloudy, windy day, and only had a few hours.

Caught all the perch on a 3” power minnow under a slip bobber. Small ones couldn’t hang onto it, and nothing could steal the bait. Only the bigger ones could hold it under for several seconds to get a good hookset.

Final tally- 10 perch and 2 walleye
