Cast iron. Can I save this?

If you get a new one sand it down like Ken tells you.I have a cabelas 14 inch and works good but not like my really old cast iron that is smooth. Going to sand down soon and start over.

I would hit that with a wire brush on a drill, then steel wool, then soapy water followed by vinegar.

Then season. I do mine at 450, wipe with a light coat of canola oil and put it in upside down for about 30-40 minutes. Pull it out, wipe it again and repeat 5-6 times.

I sanded a couple down years ago. They do cook nice. My Dutch ovens are not sanded. The pans are worth it, ovens are not IMO.

^^This. But seriously look into flaxseed oil.

Bacon tends to remove seasoning, something about the salt in it.
Follow winmag's re seasoning tips.
Just did an old skillet for a friend.
If the oven cleaner doesn't get it all off an ultrasonic cleaner can.

Sanding will ruin an older skillet, new ones are junk anyway so sand away on those.

Go fishing. Catch a bunch of panfish, filet them. Fill cast iron pan with peanut oil, heat up. Cornmeal coating for the fish, cook in hot oil in cast iron pan.

Repeat as desired

Of course you can save it. Question is how polished do you want it??

Wife thought cast iron was ugly but wanted to get away from teflon junk. I compromised and polished a 8", 10", and 12" pans for us from 60 grit up to a clay bar wool buff. Need to season them now.

My buddies mom put her cast iron into the oven when she did the self clean option.

Put it in the oven on the oven cleaning cycle.

Take it out add thin oil layer. Bake it. Repeat as many times as desired.

This is what I do too, with coconut oil, and put on VERY light layers of oil between heating. I sanded a new Lodge pan smooth after my wife ruined it, I'm glad she did, the pan is so much better now.
