Caribou hunt for 2027 with air taxi

I’m planning to hopefully get back to Alaska next September for another shot at caribou. I’m done with the boat transporters, and would like to use the services of an air taxi. My question is for those who have gone the air taxi route before, what went well and what do you wish you had done differently? I have a specific air taxi in mind, but if you had very good or very poor personal experiences with any companies I’d love to hear it (I understand if you prefer DM over the public forum for this). You’re probably already too late, most of those guys are booking for 2028 right now. The folks we went this year just kind of dropped people wherever they could land a plane. Some did good, some took time to find bulls. Seems like most everyone had an opportunity to a shoot mature bulls, just a matter of how many days it took.

Give yourself plenty of time on both ends to enjoy the experience. Yes, delays may happen as well but don’t run such a tight budget that you can’t smell some roses.

Make sure you look at a lot of heads in person. Ensure you know what is a trophy to you. Shoot the first one that passes muster.

Get to know your taxidermist. Ask him/her what their expectations are, then take the time to do it right. Don’t put them in a situation where they have to try to repair your trophy cape.

Watch your weight limit or you will be leaving stuff behind. You don’t want to fly with ANYONE who is willing to fly heavy.

No bear spray allowed on those little planes.

I like to take a little light tackle for grayling.

I don’t eat candy generally, but, I find myself Jonesing about 3 days in.

Safety first, second and….. don’t leap over anything you can walk around. A turned ankle can ruin a great plan.

Don’t drink the water unless you filter it. It’s just not worth the risk.
