Camping in the Winds

Hey folks,

Thinking about meeting up with some friends for some camping in the Pindedale area next month. Does anyone have any recommendations for a nice place to car camp on the west side of the mountains with the family? I'm guessing our friends will have their camper. I've never spent anytime down there, so I'd also be interested to hear about some good day hikes. Our kids are 3 and 5, so nothing too crazy. It would be nice to mix in some fishing at some point. I'm tossing around the idea of taking the raft. Anyone got a float they'd recommend? Any good mountain biking? And of course the most important thing...food. Any can't miss spots for a meal?

It's been over 30 years since I visited that country, so things have probably changed some. Number of nice sized lakes to camp at down low like Fremont or Green River Lakes, and I'm guessing they are quite popular. Fishing was awesome in the high country.

I hunt the area yearly (best friend/hunting buddy has family that homesteaded and still have a cabin there), and before that have done some lengthy backpack trips into the Winds themselves. The backpacking is the crown jewel there, but there are some spots that fit all of your criteria on the Upper Green right where it comes out of the National Forest. PM me for more details if you want.

Bring the raft - the fishing and floating on the Warren Bridge stretch is under-rated, IMO. The water is usually too low by the time we are there in Sep/Oct, but in summer at good flows (like now), it can be very good and there's a long floatable stretch with numerous put-in/takeout options. Great for small kiddos since you can do a short float and then turn around and do a longer more serious 'adults-only' float.
