Anyone care to take a stab at what Rev. Lowery means?:)

Benediction At Obama's Inauguration (Rev. Lowery: "When white will embrace what is right..."

Posted on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 12:31:54 PM by Laissez-faire capitalist

Benediction at Obama's inauguration, Rev. Joseph Lowery: 'Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning,

#1 we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in the back,

#2 when brown can stick around...

#3 when the red man can get ahead man;

#4 and when white will embrace what is right.

It would seem that, once again, Mr. Obama has confused racism with religion.

Once again, a double standard. If someone associated with McCain or President Bush said anything like that, they would be crucified.

Let's all mourn the death of white guilt and claims of prejudice. :( I heard a "conservative" (for those who like labels) black newsman saying the other day that we will now have to explore reasons other than racism for the social ills affecting much of the country and many of its population....

Jose,

Here is the text of his benediction. Care to explain what he meant by his last paragraph? If we are all to forget the color of ones skin what exactly was he saying by his last paragraph? I sounds pretty unflattering for those of us who are white.

Text of Rev. Lowery's inauguration benediction
By The Associated Press – 1 day ago

Text of the benediction by Rev. Joseph Lowery during President Barack Obama's inauguration, as transcribed by CQ Transcriptions:

___

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, thou, who has brought us thus far along the way, thou, who has by thy might led us into the light, keep us forever in the path we pray, lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee, lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee.

Shadowed beneath thy hand, may we forever stand true to thee, oh God, and true to our native land.

We truly give thanks for the glorious experience we've shared this day.

We pray now, oh Lord, for your blessing upon thy servant Barack Obama, the 44th president of these United States, his family and his administration.

He has come to this high office at a low moment in the national, and indeed the global, fiscal climate. But because we know you got the whole world in your hands, we pray for not only our nation, but for the community of nations.

Our faith does not shrink though pressed by the flood of mortal ills.

For we know that, Lord, you are able and you're willing to work through faithful leadership to restore stability, mend our brokenness, heal our wounds, and deliver us from the exploitation of the poor, of the least of these, and from favoritism toward the rich, the elite of these.

We thank you for the empowering of thy servant, our 44th president, to inspire our nation to believe that yes we can work together to achieve a more perfect union.

And while we have sown the seeds of greed — the wind of greed and corruption, and even as we reap the whirlwind of social and economic disruption, we seek forgiveness and we come in a spirit of unity and solidarity to commit our support to our president by our willingness to make sacrifices, to respect your creation, to turn to each other and not on each other.

And now, Lord, in the complex arena of human relations, help us to make choices on the side of love, not hate; on the side of inclusion, not exclusion; tolerance, not intolerance.

And as we leave this mountain top, help us to hold on to the spirit of fellowship and the oneness of our family. Let us take that power back to our homes, our workplaces, our churches, our temples, our mosques, or wherever we seek your will.

Bless President Barack, First Lady Michelle. Look over our little angelic Sasha and Malia.

We go now to walk together as children, pledging that we won't get weary in the difficult days ahead. We know you will not leave us alone.

With your hands of power and your heart of love, help us then, now, Lord, to work for that day when nations shall not lift up sword against nation, when tanks will be beaten into tractors, when every man and every woman shall sit under his or her own vine and fig tree and none shall be afraid, when justice will roll down like waters and righteousness as a mighty stream.

Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around ... when yellow will be mellow ... when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. That all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen

See, it reads a bit different in its entirety than in CJ's selective editing/omitting.

The biggest thing to be concerned with was this part.....
For we know that, Lord, you are able and you're willing to work through faithful leadership to restore stability, mend our brokenness, heal our wounds, and deliver us from the exploitation of the poor, of the least of these, and from favoritism toward the rich, the elite of these.

I am not looking forward to God not favouring me because of me being elite.

This part is good, wouldn't you agree?
And now, Lord, in the complex arena of human relations, help us to make choices on the side of love, not hate; on the side of inclusion, not exclusion; tolerance, not intolerance.

I'm guessing it's more because you're and A-hole?

Ditto:D:D

Jose I was asking what each pt. of referance to "skin color" meanthump

#1 we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in the back,

#2 when brown can stick around...

#3 when the red man can get ahead man;

#4 and when white will embrace what is right.

Jose instead of worring about my editing of "accurate" quotes... why don't you tell us what 1-4 means:)

CJ,

Why do you not care about the Yellow? You seem concerned with black, brown, red, and white but ignore Yellow?

Does your exclusion/hate know no bounds?

I think CJ may be getting worked up about brown sticking around. :)

My guess is that he ain't too happy with any of the other colours sticking around. I don't think he will even go to the Indian casinos.

I think that no matter what, we can all agree on this:

If its yellow, let it mellow...
If its brown, flush it down.

And, in conclusion, its all pink on the inside.

Probably will get flamed for this, but I am so sick of this guilt shit that people use to enhance their situation. To me, it is reverse racism, and the sooner people get over this shit, both those who feel guilty and those who want others to feel guilty, the sooner we will move forward.

I have not one bit of guilt for slavery, as tragic as that was. I am not at all apologetic for the Native Americans getting fugged out of thier land, as unfair as that was. It is terrible that Japanese were getting imprisoned during WWII, but nothing I can do about it. And I don't think the US should be a safe haven for every person who claims hardship in their country has forced them to come here illegally, as much as it may be true that their country is messed up.

I had nothing to do with any of it.

I could go on and on about how screwed over my granparents were when they came from Norway, Finland, and Sweden, not speaking a bit of English, but happy as hell to be here. I still have my great granfather's naturalization papers. I have my other grandfather's paperwork from Staten Island. In our family, those are important documents, as they represent who much sacrafice these people made to come somewhere new and how hard it was to make a better place for them and their families.

Did they want something handed to them because the language barrier put them in some bad business deals? No, it made them understand how important it was to learn the language and make sure their children spoke the language. Were they given the shittiest and most dangerous jobs? Yup, and it was a hell of lot better than starving to death back home in Scandanavia.

I tell everyone that being born a white male in America is the greatest blessing in the world. I feel very strongly about that. But, that doesn't make me responsible for every self-created problem the world wants to place on the collective shoulders of white males.

I treat every person with dignity and respect, unless they prove they don't deserve such. I don't need a preacher telling me to "embrace what is right."

Right according to who? According to some unemployable college professor who has developed some obscure theory as to why no one in this country is responsible for their own desitiny.

Right according to some person who claims to be of faith, yet has vested himself in driving the victimization wedge deeper into our society.

Funny that Bill Cosby and Shelby Steele, two known critics of victimization are left out of the Obama parties. If you want some good reads about this topic, go read what two very scholarly black gents think about it. They have it figured out, but the status quo of those claiming to "helpless victims" want these guys at "the back of the bus." So far back that no one can hear the logic they are purveying.

As people much smarter than I have said, victimization provides entitlement to one group by demanding obligation from another group.

Get on with it folks. A non-white person holds the most powerful job in the world. If that is not enough to move forward, then get over yourself and move to some place else and see how much they give a fugg about those who are "victims."

Whew, glad I got that off my chest.

Even more if he has those valuable "free" coupons they give to the old people in the casino playing the quarter machines and chain smoking Pall Mall's while drinking Whiskey Sours.

Yep Jose "knows it all"...Hoser this has a 1st place of 1 million... free roundtrip airfare.. luxury suite... foodetc,etc... Yep they give this to "everyone"|oo|oo....I'll call you if I need help with my luggage:D
