Today was the Fresno CA. region Science Olympiad, a science competition that pits kids from 3 different school districts. Roughly 1,000 of the brightest kids from all over the County.

My son Erik competed in three different categories. Water quality testing, map reading and identifying minerals. His teacher just texted us the results

He got;

Map reading 1st place

Water quality testing 1st place

Minerals 5th place

Because of him, his science team is going to the California state finals.

Those are really neat and good for kids ,kind of gives them a reason to learn 'light at the end of the tunnel'! Great job.

He is 12, 7th grade.
His science teacher/coach is going bonkers. There school has not made it to the state level in years.

That's awesome! I've been producing an educational science and technology show for kids the past couple years and am really impressed at the potential some kids show in STEM areas. Most American kids are deciding around your son's age that they want zero part of STEM-related education and career paths and that spells bad news for the future of this country - glad your son is bucking the trend and kicking butt!
