I had mentioned on a podcast that a person had approached me about using a bot to illustrate how easy it is to get tags on the CPW reissue list. He had proven the same on the website mentioned in the article linked below.

He said he was as able to get any float permit he wanted, even when odds were less than 1%. He did it to prove a point. The problem at Recreation.gov still hasn’t been fixed.

He told me the same is happening at CPW with the reissue list and offered to do the same thing for me on the CPW site to prove his point. I’ve not taken him up on his offer, but I’ve thought about doing it, screen capturing it, not to scam a tag but to show that is can be done and is likely being done each year, the same as is happening at Recreation.gov.

Anyhow, found this article interesting. A known problem that goes unresolved.

or we be quiet about it so I can continue to use my experience and expertise on the subject to get tags on the reissue list *wink wink*

All kidding aside, yes this isn't very hard to do and it absolutely can be done with a program like auto hotkey that is easy to download and learn how to use. You just need to trial and error experiment with it for a few weeks to learn how the process works and the steps that CPW has taken to try and limit this from happening. I was able to get past all of their measures for the most part last year.

I would 100% expect this was happening with some of the high demand tags in Idaho old non resident tag system, there really was no other explanation for how a few connected people kept getting the hardest to get tags year after year.

Technology is the worst and all the AI and data center crap is only making the problems bigger

It might be worth it to reach out to CPW about the issue, but I think they are aware it is a problem. And I'm not sure they will take extensive measures to fix it given that it won't be much of an issue after 2027. They are making the switch from Aspira to Brandt, and returned tags will be auto reissued beginning in 2028.

If bots really could pull that off with regularity, guys like a friend of mind would not have snagged a reissue desert sheep ram tag at a regular CPOW tag vendor. Do not doubt bots are getting it done with CPW reissues, but not as completely and perfectly as some want to imagine. IMO

Surprised nobody has tried the concert-ticket waiting-room model on this yet — randomized queue position when the page opens, every refresh just keeps your spot in line. Doesn’t stop bots from getting in line, but it stops them from gaining anything by hammering refresh. Anyone know if CPW has actually said what’s blocking a fix in the meantime, or is it just “wait for the 2028 Brandt rollout”?
