Bison Incident in Yellowstone

I drive by a bunch of bison on the way to Missoula sometimes. I'll stop and measure the posts. mtmuley
Here you go...measure this one.

Most over-built corral I've ever seen and the one I have experience with. Probably just made out of lodgepoles, duct tape, and baling wire.

I don’t know. I spent a lot of years working with bison all over. I can’t see from the video that the guy did anything necessarily wrong, but he sure wasn’t picking up the body language cues. I wouldn’t really expect your average tourist to know those though. Laying down bison is just chilling, right?

That bull was pissed from the moment the video rolled (the version showing several behaviors prior to the initial charge). All that tail swishing? Aggression. Rubbing his face in the dirt? Aggression. Exaggerated wallowing display? Aggression. I’d say 90% of bison wouldn’t care about that guy. Most of the time I’m super surprised that the bison are WAY more tolerant of idiots getting in their face than people deserve. But I’ve also seen a few bison in Yellowstone in particular go out of their way to go after someone for no reason who was just minding their own business and following the rules. They are rutting now, who knows what happened prior to the video, whatever. Bottom line, I feel bad for that guy.

If the bison had already been terrorizing the campground, and people were warning each other, etc., maybe they should have warned this guy a little sooner, they're all way too close, including the guy filming, considering they already knew how the bull was acting. But the old guy didn't know what was going on or I believe he'd have stayed further away with the kid. Guy filming made sure he got his footage, then acted like some kind of hero. It was brave and stupid that they chased tbe bull away, luckily he didn't have more victims.

I think Yellowstone needs to modernize their warning sign and make it more realistic.

From this, which has way too many words.

To this, worth at least a thousand words.
