Big mistake during the flyover in the Opening Ceremonies of the Indy 500. One plane in the group is supposed to pull out of the formation and lift skyward in remembrance of all those would did not make it back. Did not happen or the cameras missed it, which is just as bad.

On a side note, there was a time when the Indy 500 and the bigger NASCAR races were as much a test of endurance as they were about speed. When I first started paying attention to racing back in the 70's, blown engines were commonplace. It seems engine building technology has reached the point where you seldom hear of someone being knocked out of a race due to a blown engine. Not sure but perhaps that's because those older engines were built from heavier and yet still stock parts, while today's engines are fabricated from key parts built specifically for racing.

Could also be that they couldn’t. The speedway is on the edge of surface based C and under the outer shelf of the Indy class C. Also a ton of banner towing planes and other crap congesting a small chunk of airspace.
