I have a 6.5 CM I want to shoot longer range with it say 800-900 yds. But be able to hand to a kid and have them use it just fine at shorter ranges. Here is my thoughts and the parameters I have in my head:
  1. max min to be 5x
  2. at least 16x min max?
  3. Not a "busy" scope reticle wise because a kid could get confused. I have a Burris eliminator on one 6.5 and the kids have trouble with how busy it is and focusing on the crosshairs
  4. Turret for yardage with zero stop
  5. about $600-$700 max

They aren’t 16 power, but my daughter and I both have 3-9 SWFAs on our 6.5 CMs. They work up close and out to the ranges you are talking about. They don’t come with zero stops but there is a quick fix for that (washers). They dial reliably, hold zero well, and the reticle is not too busy.

A Leupold Vx3HD in 4.5x14 would get you 95% of what you want. I would worry about getting better glass instead of magnification.

I like the windplex reticle for longer ranges, but for a dedicated hunting rig it's hard to not stick with a duplex reticle and knob for elevation.

The Vortex Viper 3x15 is right inside that price range as well.

I have a vx5 3-15x44 and it has everything you are asking for. Has the windplex reticle which is pretty calm. It is SFP so I don't know if that matters to you or not.
I just thought back on this and 15x may be a little low for 800-900. Leupold does have some 4-20x52 which may fit your needs better.

Your upper end budget is getting close to a used Maven RS1.2. Vortex like warranty with great glass and most importantly they hold zero.

This option, if CDS, will only get a 22” 6.5CM to about 650 depending on environmentals with a 2” high at 100 zero, due to only 14.5 moa of available turret travel. I’ve got this same set-up on my wife’s rifle.

I’ve been happy with my Leica Amplus 6 3-18. FOV is super wide, can see the end of my barrel on 3X.

You might look at TRACT optics. They have 3-15x42 scopes with SCHOTT HD glass for a little more than $700, and they have sales pretty frequently. I put one on my granddaughter's 6.5.

Yup. This is a good point. I didnt realize it was that limited when i got one. I bumped to a 200 yard zero but its still sort of limiting especially with a duplex reticle. Helps your wifes barrel is 6" longer than mine the 30mm might have some

@Nuts - just depends on what you want. If its a "hunting first" rifle - i think the vx3hd would be fine but if you want a target/lr rifle for ringing steel it will be limiting compared to something like an mk5 or other.

Kenton industries makes turrets for all kinds of scopes that can be for your bullet, mv, and DA. Ive never used one - i just print a card off with drops and tape it to my stock.

1i nch tube or 30mm?
Both in the vx3 only have that on one rotation of turret. They have more overall travel than that but the turret is only marked for a single rotation. Have to go up to the vx5 to get more moa per rotation
