I grew up in a small MT town in the 60's-70's when homemade stuff was still ok. One stop netted you a caramel apple every year. That was always pretty good.

My grandma makes these popcorn balls every year with candy corns and some other stuff mixed in and then held together with some kind of syrup. Another vote for home made stuff...from people I know!
