My closest friend has watched his Dad battle Leukemia for several years now and it appears that he doesn't have much time left. His brother got into town today and his sister is coming in on the weekend so they can be together.

I clearly remember Dan's Dad taking us to Burger King and then snapper fishing one Summer in the 70's for Dan's birthday party. His Dad and my Father took six of us goofy teenage boys to the hunter safety course over 40 years ago. Dan's Father spent some time touring Europe on a motorcycle and had a blast in his first attempt at grad school in Montana way back when. He packed the family up and spent a month going cross country the day we finished 6th grade and Dan still talks about that trip.

Dan got tickets in 2009 for a game at the new Yankee Stadium and me and my Dad joined him and his Father for our first trip to the "house that Jeter built." And I remember many Summer nights when his Father took us fishing somewhere before we had our driver's licenses. He has lived well, raised a fine family, and never quite played golf as well as he wished, but he did get a hole-in-one once. I consider him one of the coolest dudes i have known and a fine gentleman. My friend is hurting and I hope his Father can find peace now. And yes, I can't believe how lucky I am now to still have my own Father.

The longer you live , the more people you will lose who are close to you. However, the older you get you build more memories and it hits harder when they go. Here at HT we gather to talk about our roots, swap stories (never hotspots), and share what makes our outdoor pursuits so memorable. Dan's Dad helped make those things happen for us. Take a moment to thank those who fostered your desire to hunt, fish, trap, camp, sharpen a knife, etc. and know they gave you a gift.

Watching a parent die of cancer, or anything else is tough. I've been there. Twice. Prayers out. mtmuley
