Average Joe's 2019

Looks like you both are prepared as usual! Good luck fellas and bring home the meat!!!!

Haha. I don't know if I'm prepared. I don't have any food or gear set aside for the upcoming hunts. I've been procrastinating on the preparation front. I'll probably shop for food tomorrow and get my gear together 45 minutes before I leave. I look at it this way, as long as I have my weapon dialed in, boots, a pack, tags, knife, coolers and a credit card, the rest of the stuff will sort itself out. I can sleep on the ground if needed, and there's no shortage of food in America. Most things are nice to have and not at all necessary. Sometimes living without the niceties is a good thing. It'll buff out.

I got out and did some fishing with a few guys from work. As expected, the lake was a clown show, but we still managed to catch a couple dozen 1-2lb smallmouths, a handful of largemouths and one decent fish.

We ended up spending about 11 hours on the lake and we were pretty dead by the end of it....

It was a fun day on the water with the guys.

Now it's time to switch gears and chase after some land-based critters.

I'm heading up to Oregon Friday night after the family and I get back from a quick vacation. After the long drive, I'll have 4 or 5 days to hunt before I have to come back to NM to do some scouting and hunt here.

I'm not even close to packed or anything, but at least my bow is shooting good.

Not bad for 80yds.

More than what I tell my wife. 😅

Seriously though, I budget for 2 dozen arrows a year. I won't break that many this year because I haven't shot for 8 months, but I expect to lose a dozen-ish by the time hunting season is over.

I have all my food organized and ready to go. 16 days worth of food at 2700ish calories per day, plus some extras. According to my macro calculator I should lose about 10lbs on this trip. Hopefully the DQ stops along the way will counter that unnecessary weight loss.

Good luck keeping the weight on.I lost 14lbs on my Javelina trip in Jan.
(Dressed for winter), and Arizona said...Make It Summer! Not an enjoyable adventure.
P.S. I don't know if eating Hefty bags and Cling Wrap is going to help.Ha!,Ha!

I’m on the road too!

I made it to the mountain just before sunset only to find my camp occupied by two pesky squatters...

Too bad I don't have a deer tag and they're not 3 years older. I saw a lot of deer on the way up the mountain, 3 decent bucks, these 2 forkies and 8-9 does. Hopefully they didn't push all of the elk out of the area. 😏

I got my camp established well enough for this trip, but in my haste to get out I forgot 2 things at home; extra arrows for my primary bow (I still have 5 in my quiver and over a dozen for my backup bow) and a spork.

It feels great to be in the mountains again, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings... Weather looks like it be good for revving up some rut activity.

Looks slightly miserable... Just the way I like it.👍

The elk are still living in spike meadow. Just like last year.

Had a cow broadside and in the open at 43, but she was looking in my direction. The herd was behind her so I let her walk thinking the next one would follow her... That didn't happen. 14 cows and calves walked past me by within 100yds and no dead elk.

There's almost no wind right now, so it's kind of hard to make a move. It's chilly and the clouds are beginning to sink closer and closer to the ground. Feels like rain.
