Anybody ever damage thier trigger finger

My 12 yr old son just took off the tip of his trigger finger last friday. If you look at your finger and cut the nail in half through the finger, thats what I saw on my son. Some of you might have seen a picture of him with the turkey he killed this year. Doctor did the skin graph on monday. I am now looking for a thumb release for him. My question is, what is going to happen? Has this happened to you, or someone you know? He is just starting to realize what that finger does for him and is asking questions. I would like some insight if any you have to offer on what to expect.

If any of you have an old thumb release you would like to sell, let me know.

elk hunter, not exactly. he thought his chain on his bike came off, so he checked it with his finger while he was riding it. I don't ever want to hear my kidds scream like that again, and he is a tough kid.

Ooooh ouch; I played around with chains when I was a kid and had similar accidents, but not as bad.

My nephew did that, but not while riding his bike. He had it upside down and was trying to put the chain back on. He ran his finger under the chain and around the sprocket. They sewed his fingertip back on, and it has worked well. It was touch and go there for a while as to whether the tip could be saved or not, though.

Like I said, when I was a kid, I got into all sorts of mechanical trouble. Had a belt sander suck my fingernail completely off, had a big stack of weights (hundred or so pounds) fall on my thumbnail which split my skin right open, had another finger slammed in a locker at school, had another couple fingers slammed in a car door, etc. All the boys in our family knew the doctors all too well in our town growing up. Looking back, I think it's funny the stuff I went through but I'm sure at the time, my parents were beside themselves.

Cali, to be honest I should have looked for the tip but I couldn't believe what I was looking at and knew I had to get him to the hospitol. This is son #2 and I had 4 brothers. This injury to that finger broke me.

I didnt loose a part of my finger but about 15 years ago a steel object (a starter off a semi) slipped out of my left hand and fell on my right hand on cement. I didnt break any bones but my trigger finger blew out...literally.

When the blood blew out it ripped a gash from the middle knuckle to the finger trip. It wasnt a pretty sight.

Anyways now I shoot ambidexterously. My right trigger finger doesnt have to much feeling and its about twice the size of what it was. I hardly use it. I'm a mechanic and about 90% of the time I dont use it, I dont type with it etc and the cold temps kill it but you adapt. I also shoot alot with my right middle finger.

The only time I have a hard time shooting lefty is trap. with both eyes open, my dominate eye (my right) doesnt cooperate with the left, but I'm still working on it.

Its gonna take time but your son will adapt, he may have to try a few different techniques or pieces of gear but he'll over come it. I wish him the best.

Never hurt my trigger finger I just took off my thumb with a hatchet when I was 13 had it reattached have some nerve damage then I split it open with a broadhead this year.

My dad took his off in the same spot, your boy will be fine, it never affected my dad, it will be sore for awhile but after the point of that, he should be just fine.

I did the same thing 2 hours before I was to leave for my late unit 12awest hunt back in the early 90's.
docs said not to go but I left anyway, tip ended up falling off after a few days up there Oh well it grew back a few years later and you can't tell.

I feel a little better now after reading the replies. Like I said, he is just starting to realize how important that finger is, I will pass it on to him to cheer him up a little.

Sliced the tip of my thumb off diagonally halfway thru the nail...all the way to the bone with a vegetable v-slicer. Was a bitch stopping the bleeding. Didn't go to the Doc. Grew back just fine...no sensation loss & no discernible scar. Smashed another so badly half the tip & complete nail died & fell off..good as new.

Dang that is tough. I have a Client who is going thourgh the very same thing as we speak, still has the protective cover on it. He was out on the lake working on his outboard, fiddling with this and that, asked the wife to hit the starter...finger got stuck inbetween the flywheel and the starter! Finger was gone from the front end joint. He says it has'nt been too bad, but I can't read a damm thing he types anymore, typos galore! Good Luck to your Boy, John

I was baby sitting the kids and My boy was helping me work on an outboard, I took it the power head off put it on his wagon and was pulling it, he went behind the wagon and pushed it really hard well the motor slid back cutting his finger off from the back of the nail bed ( tip of the bone).
I took him to Er and a plastic surgeon sewed the nail bed and tip back on. they said that they had to reconstruct the nail bed due to his age or he would have problems with his nail and they would ahve to pull them all the time ( something like that) he said that the sewing might work might not as thats the hardest thing to rebuild.
for a few years it was pretty bad the nail was like 3 time the thickness finally started growing right the last year or so.

Delw, What a terrible feeling it is to see your kids in that kind of pain. I hope you kid is back to normal and suffers no ill effects from it.
