.270 or 30-06?

I rebarreled my 30'06 to 270. I've thought about switching it back to shoot slightly larger diameter bullets of the 30'06, but it's not really worth the work. Either will work fine.

I own both. If using for just deer sized game and smaller then stick with the .270. If you want to consider an occasional elk then it’s probably a toss up. If elk is regularly hunted then I would feel more comfortable with the heavier bullet of a 30-06. A lot of it is picking nits, though. As I said, I own both

Have both, When it comes to reloading, the 06 seems to be the most versatile cartridge available. Love it.

I always end up in the field with the .308win though.

I like the 30-06, haven't shot it in a few years. Just loads of time in the mountains hunting along with Dad when he carried a 1903 Springfield that he bought from a catalog for $18.88 in about 1960 or so. Don't know where that gun is now.

I think there is more to the frontal diameter of a bullet in regards to hunting big game than folks give credence but everyone talks about velocity and now BC. .30-06 is pretty hard to beat, even in 2025.

My uncle has Grandpa's 270 a Winchester pre '64 model 70. Since he doesn't have any kids, if I were to inherit it, I think I would offer it to one of my daughters to hunt with. It makes me wonder when does an old rifle become too old?

My pre 64 70 in 270 has killed 3 elk in the last 2 years. My others in 30-06 and 300 win mag are capable of the same. I’d give up my Cooper before I’d give up any of these
