2025 WY Sheep Hunt

Went up to the mountain Saturday to set up the wall tent. Planning on taking next Wednesday through Saturday/Sunday off to sheep hunt hard. Probably leave it up to elk hunt out of as well. Saturday evening drove down to river to glass before it got dark. Found the same big group of ewes and lambs with the two little rams. No big guys yet. Glassed up a nice moose paddle across the river too.

Headed back up Saturday morning. Took my daughter again (she was with me last time we spotted rams), and her friend from school. Her friend has never been hunting, let alone sheep hunting. It was supposed to rain most of the day, so I pretty much chalked the day up to road hunting, snack eating, shooting the .22, and maybe some hiking. Found some grouse on the way, and managed to shoot one. As we were just getting to the area we were planning on hunting, we passed some deer hunters in a sxs. I stopped and asked if they had seen any sheep. As a matter of fact they had! They told me about a group of 12 rams they had spotted not too long ago. We were headed that direction anyway so off we went. Didn't take to long to find them, not far from the road.

Seemed crazy that the next time I had seen rams my daughter was with me again. Round two!

We looked over the group and again none of the rams stuck out over the others as a clear shooter, although the two girls thought most of them looked huge and good enough to shoot. Seeing as the rams didn't seem to care at all we were there (they definitely hadn't been hunted much), I decided to take a bit more time looking them over to see which one looked the best. I was surprised at how difficult it was to judge them.20251011_120639.jpg20251011_120706.jpg

The previous two pics show all 12 rams. A couple of the rams had a wider look to them, which I really like, but I think they were younger. It eventually came down to two rams. The second from the left in the second Pic, and the ram behind on the rock, facing away, in the first Pic. I really wanted to get a better look at the one behind the rock though.

Nap time first.

Eventually they got up and begin to feed, and I was able to get a better look at the ram behind the rock. Definitely looked like one of the better, if not the best ram of the bunch. His horns looked to be closer to full curl, although maybe a bit tight compared to the other ram I liked, which had maybe a larger curl but, not as long?

At this point I was honestly waffling if I even wanted to shoot one. On the one hand I didn't want the hunt to end and I hadn't even begun to hunt seriously. I had plans to camp and hunt the more rugged areas of the unit. But on the other hand it was awesome to have my daughter with me again (second chance!) and her friend tagging along, and a couple rams did look pretty good. Thats why we were there afterall. It was a tough choice to pull the trigger; I hadn't anticipated this confliction in all the years of dreaming about sheep. Anyway, they had kept feeding while all that was going through my mind, and were making their way toward me. 50, 40, 20...14 yards. Too close!

It didn't take long for one ram to catch site of me, decide they were close enough, and move off about hundred yards. At about this time I saw a chip missing out of the left horn on the ram I liked the most, and for whatever reason I thought this ram has character. Screw it i thought, I'm going to shoot him. I'll go camp and hunt elk next week.
