Hey Schmalts, while I admit I havent been in the Gunny this year, I camped in 55, 551, 66, & 67 last summer and I was amazed at the lack of Deer in the Gunny basin. That winter a few years back really did some damage to the herd. In years past before the big winterkill we would see deer all...

...to need to attract a different crowd then the ones who have lots of money and the license fee isnt an issue. Most hunters I know wont spend the $551 for an IA tag either. Not a fair comparison. Cost is a huge factor and I understand that it would appear to put a strain on the budgets but...
...2 things that stuck out to me were:
1."Archery elk licenses are totally limited in units 54, 55 and 551"...I don't know exactly what that means...but I think it means there will be a cap on OTC archery tags for these units. I know there some folks on this thread that archery hunt these...
...have been sold out."
Beginning this year, archery hunters can no longer purchase over-the-counter licenses for Game Management Units 54, 55 and 551. All Gunnison archery licenses are allocated by the limited drawing only for the 2010 season. Therefore, bow hunters must participate in the...

Well, I never expected to be back this early......I'll actually have a few days to relax before Fred and I depart to Colorado for our backpacking trip. As you know, I didn't know I drew the Strip tag until late in the summer. Since I had already drawn a good Colorado tag that opened a week...
I generally pass a few each season trying to get something better. Sometimes it pays off....sometimes it doesn't.
Here's one I passed opening morning in Arizona at 40 yards a few seasons back.......never had another opportunity for a decent buck. Just part of the game.
Moosie:
Here's a few bulls that are in your requested range (300-360). Stan may have trouble posting some examples of bulls in this range.......now 360-420, he'll have no problem. :D
All of these bulls have been officially measured, so the gross and net are known. These are simply medium...
Don't know many ranchers that allow trespass fees.......but there are some TOAD whiteys there. This one was on a family friends property (near Sundance) two years ago.......man, I need to go bowhunt these things.
Over the next few days I was able to sneak in on a few decent bucks.......and even missed one. I also, regrettably lost one. I must have hit him too high, as Jerry, Wally and I tracked that buck over 4 miles.....for two days. Never stopped and finally the sparse blood trail ended. A guy that saw...
