she had never been in a snowball fight, and did not understand they're different than slushball fights. That first hard icy one that went whizzing past her face at 40 mph had her forfeiting pretty quick.

Ok, so here’s the reality check: Reservations at Mammoth or Snow Lodge at OF are gonna be slim to none if you’re thinking this Christmas. West, Gardiner, Chico, Big Sky will offer additional (and more plentiful) options, but I wouldn’t wait around.

Having explored Yellowstone many times and all seasons, several favorite trips have been in winter. 'Recommend staying at Mammoth or near the Park in Gardiner or Cooke City. The highway from Mammoth to Cooke City is full of trailheads and typically provides viewing of wildlife. Depending on weather and snow conditions, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, or hiking provides access to really cool places and great wildlife viewing. (Example: Wife and I skied up over a ridge off the Lamar Valley through many elk beds in the snow. When we crested the ridge, there were a dozen huge bull elk right there, within yards of us.)

Yellowstone winter sights, sounds, and smells are spectacular.

I had my honeymoon in Jackson during the government shutdown of 1996. Luckily it lifted the last day of our stay and we were able to do a horse drawn sleigh ride through there.

Never got to Yellowstone then or the 10 years I spent elk hunting in the drainages that flowed into the Gros Ventre.

I suppose I better fix that.
