Am I the only one feeling a bit disgusted by this article? It isn't so much the fact of a 600 yard shot, that is for a different discussion, but by the fact that the article highlights it being 600 yards. Why not just remove the range from the story? Shooting 600 yards takes practice and solid knowledge of the ballistics of your rifle and ammo and I'm not a fan of the article promoting the shot distance as a highlight of the event. She may be able to do it but does this make others now think they can when they shouldn't be?

Why are you only practicing to 500 yards but then in the field taking a 600 yard shot? The ballistics are significantly different between those two ranges and its another MOA into your on target shot variance.

Im very happy for the young lady and she did a terrific job. With that said I whole heartily agree with your feelings. I read you are in no way trying to take away from her accomplishments and neither am I.
If she had been able to belly crawled to 200yds I would feel better about her "guide" but the same abouther.
Its just a click bait style article and title. A lot of people just don't want to ask tuff moral questions when kids are involved for fear of how it will be received. Fortunately we don't have to judge a kids morality when they are likely just executing the task they were handed. This young lady seems to have done so very well.

Or maybe the younger set will read with practice and the best equipment I can afford I too can make a long shot, and they practice it before going out to hunt.

I wonder how many youth this season snuck into under 100 yards on an elk? Why don't we hear about that?

My son and I belly crawled to 300 on around 40 head in open country and he took his first big game animal a 5pt bull. I wish we had made it closer it was a hell of a lot of fun I didn't want the moment to end!

The emphasis of the post is a 600 yd shot. Not impressed! Teach her to stalk, to hunt, and respect the game. Would we be reading about a gut shot elk because a puff of wind blew the bullet off target. The adults in charge of this cluster should be ashamed.

Just don't want the range highlighted. 600 yards is not a normal range that anybody can just pick up and do - which is what happens when someone used to shooting a shotgun in the thick woods of the East reads an article about a 12 year being about to shoot 600 yards like its nothing and he thinks, well if she can do it so can I and heads to Montana and wounds 3 elk before finally knocking one down.

Forget the article and jump on a hunting forum. That should keep you busy criticizing how others hunt and shoot.

Sure, this one time one of my daughters, shortly after taking a hunter safety course with an instructor who highlighted “ethical” distance.

So there we were on a youth only area of a BMA. Bunch of elk 2 ridges over, completely relaxed, crusty old snow in the ground , they were 380 yards and she had a prone shot with rear support. Asked her what she wanted to do and she said “get closer” so we dropped down knowing we would lose and gain a couple hundred feet of elevation and come over the ridge within 100 yards. That’s exactly what happened, out of breath, 1’ snow drift to lay in, elk spooked and were doing that chit where they run 15-50 yards then stop for a second, so from a shitty position off a pack, laying in a snow drift, at a spooked elk she rushed and shoots it couple inches low and blows a hole through both front legs. Now she’s all shaken up as this elk is nose dived in to the snow moving all over while she try’s to kill it with a few more, managed to connect on the 4th mid body and put it on the ground. So we run up and she shoots it in the neck at 20 yards to finish it.

What could have happened. Could have spent 3 minutes making a solid position, getting comfortable, ranged it 5 times, dialed to whatever, practiced a couple dry fires with follow through, double checked the wind, poured some coffee, ate a snack stick and punched a hole through its lungs like we’ve done with all my other kids since then.

The fact is this is just more people who need recognition for the critter they shot on their farm that they have had for years and has big critters on it....I mean really...who cares...

This is a good point but a couple of things.
When it comes to shooting 600yd is 3x 380yd. Also if it's not a good situation it was on you to tell her not to shoot regardless of range.
I believe some kids may be proficient at 600 but why is the distance the focus of her accomplishment?

I agree with your point, but have concerns about your math. Unless you mean 3x as difficult.
