I have never paid much attention or really cared about the price difference when applying for an antelope tag. But this year I am planning on taking my 13YO son, and its making me really think about what direction to go as I plan my fall. Reg tags for us would cost $436 or special $1,228 that's $792 more over the reg tags, I could buy an elk tag with that difference LOL. We will have 5 pp ea and the special really opens up some more options. Decisions decisions, let the fun begin.

$1,228 divided by 40 lbs of meat = $30.70/lb. I'd equate that to walking into a fancy seafood place and ordering every lobster in the tank and thinking that no one will look at you funny.

with 5 points each I think with little leg work on your part you two can draw good hunt without dumping the money in the special draw.

I'm not saying that the special draw isn't expensive. However if we all started breaking down what the game in our freezer cost per pound this would be a drop in the bucket.

Ya, lets start talking about gear costs per pound of meat while were at it.... We could have a lot of wuygo beef...... :p

I'd hate to figure up all my annual expensive chasing big game, including gas, gear, tags.

Together we have 10 points, he will be 14 next year so he is contributing 2 to the pool, I have been saving points to split with him. And plan on taking reserving a full week for this hunt. I'm not worried about us not getting one, more concerned with the quality of the hunt.

5 points in either pool opens a lot of doors for us. I will wait and see how they fair after this winter/spring and start making a list of units for both pools.

Don't forget in the right area you may be able to chase some sage grouse and that opportunity may go by the wayside in future years, fishing is also great in Sept and early Oct for spawning trout.
Might also depend if you want to camp or stay in town.

Have never thought about chasing sage grouse, not against it, just never crossed my mind. Fishing though, that is on the list for after we fill our tags, and willing to travel to different area to fish, I have yet to fish after filling my tag, always hurry home so I can save those vacation days. And will be camping so unit doesn't matter how close to town, I usually run a mobile camp and set up wherever I end up at the end of the day, and break in the morning.

You have been planning and dreaming of the hunt for 10+ yrs, might as well spend the extra $ to ensure that you get the best memories possible. The special draw should get you more public land and less pressure.
