Would you spend several years hunting just one animal?

I think if I had him on my private land for 2 years in a row, I'd start watching him and wait till he max's out.

It seems to be easier for WT than Muley's on public. Of course look how many guys chased the spider bull a few years ago.

Spidey was no match for the posse that facilitated his demise.

Personally I don't think I would have the patience nor time and dedication to do so. I hunt on my vacation time and filling the freezer ranks very high. That said, if I had access to time (and likely the private land) to do so I think there could be incredibly valuable lessons learned about the animal, the species and the habitat. I feel though that if I chased a single animal, I could not bring myself to release the arrow or pull the trigger as I would not want the game of “cat and mouse” to end and the learning to stop.

To be truthful, watching a deer grow over the years makes me less likely to want to hunt him. But if one specific predator is causing me issues, that would be another issue entirely. Kinda like ol' Slewfoot....

I don't own a game camera. Perhaps that would change if I had a better idea of what was "out there".

RJ, do you partake of the doe harvest? That would make it an easier call if on could fill the freezer with a doe or two and then sit on the big boy. I could see that if I was "Back Home Again....".... BTW, did you know this is Jim Nabors' last year singing at the 500? I am a little depressed as hearing that song before the race has been one of my constants all over the world

SFC, I will normally shoot a couple of does and have them processed for the landowners yes, however, I usually do that on one of the state park hunts, not in my normal hunting woods. I would shoot a doe in early bow season for myself, but, after the rut. . no does for me. I hope you get over your sadness of "OL' Gomer" LOL. . .

When I was in High School, there was a mule deer buck on a place I worked / hunted that I really wanted to tag. I hunted him every chance I got - and came very close 1 time.

He liked to hang out in a corner of the property (sage brush hills environment). There was a resevoir nearby and he had good escape routes. I found some of the common ones, but would only hunt them every week or so - I didn't want to push him out. Early one morning, well before daylight, I hid in a patch of sagebrush. I saw him and a group of ten does working their way up the trail I was on. He was under 400 yards - and I was going to let him have it at 200. Before he got there, some folks starting shooting at him across the fence. I was mad and very disappointed.

He maybe went 150. But he was a monster to me. I chased the shooters but couldn't catch up to them and didn't see their outfit (very small town in Eastern MT, I would have known them had I seen it).

I think if the situation is right - you live near the area and have ample time to spend - it can be fun and a good learning experience. You can always tag out with something else. I know I learned alot about mule deer behavior by trying to take just 1. Hell, people think I'm crazy when I'll take a cow elk 6 miles in the back-country over a rag-horn bull I could drive up to.
