World Cup 2026 starting today

What an amazing evening with @kansasson and 69k (completely full stadium) of my closest friends.

Algeria and Austria put on quite a good showing Saturday night. Austria needed a win or a tie to continue to the knockout stage, while Algeria with a win would get Spain in their next game.

We were sitting with supporters of both sides, but leaning stronger to the Algerian Fenecs. They played hard until the last fifteen minutes when they really decelerated play. Algeria kept the ball in their defensive half for long stretches at time, with the Austrians seemingly content to defend whatever little effort being made to advance the ball.

The crowd became restless, and eventually waves of boos came from the crowd, wishing to see an honest effort from both teams (Austria was guilty of passivity as well, just not as grievously apparent). Plenty of folks were heading to the exits, with the family just in front of us leaving as the dad was heard to say, “if they’re not gonna play soccer, we might has well go home”.

And then suddenly in extra time Algeria found an open slot, made a great pass to the finisher who buried the ball into the net. Stunned Austrians knew that their World Cup was about to end…..until in stunning fashion a long cross was heading close to passing the goal line when the tall forward headed it back into play, right to the head of the recently subbed on sharpshooter. Equalizer at the latest moment possible. Such joy for the European team, but not so bad for the team from North Africa as they are thru to the knockout stages. And for any fans who weren’t pulling for one team or the other, we got to watch spirited world class athletes show off their skills for most of an amazing contest.

Algeria to play Switzerland, while Austria gets the European champs Spain

Stunned

We just sat there looking at each other with shock and disbelief on our faces.

And the thing of it is, there wasn’t going to be a sad face in the crowd.

Both teams advance.

If you didn’t have a dog in the fight you got to see some great moments of soccer, and to feel what a historic sporting event feels like.

And I come home with a souvenir cap, tshirt and cup.

But as I said before, a priceless memory with @kansasson.
