Why are we seeing seemingly private PMs?

Can someone explain the what and how (more importantly the how not to) of these profile posts? They seem like they were intended as PMs but they show up on my what’s new page. I love the new boards software, but this “feature” has me scratching my head.

Those are visitor messages, not private messages. Even on the old forum, anyone could see your VMs if they clicked on your profile. If you want it to be private, use a PM, not a VM.

So a private message is a "start conversation", but if you go to the persons profile and type in the box it shows up in the profile posts?

Yep, looks like everybody's profile posts show up.
