The application game is frustrating and honestly for someone starting at 55 with no points built up, the wait for premium tags could take longer than you want to spend.I am 55YO and have never applied for any western tags. Where does one get started? I don't feel like applying for 10 years and still don't have any tags. Is it even worth it? Not to mention the money wasted just applying for years with no tags to show for it.
The good news is cow elk tags in Wyoming are OTC for many units, meaning no draw required, no waiting, no application fees wasted. You can hunt this year.
The catch is that the best wilderness areas require a licensed outfitter for non-residents, which actually works in your favor because the outfitter handles all the logistics and gets you into country you couldn't access on your own.
We have a guided cow elk hunt listed on Xploreum (xploreum.io). 3 days horseback 12 miles into the Washakie Wilderness of Shoshone National Forest near Cody Wyoming. Licensed outfitter with a special use permit, small group, all meals included, November dates available September 30 through December 20. No points needed, no years of waiting, just buy the tag and go.
