I was talking to a younger guy the other day, younger as in 40yrs old, and the conversation got around to "what if". What if the USA was attacked on our own soil? He was saying that he would pack up what he could and head for an area like ours. I asked him what all he would bring to be prepared? His answer was ammo and alcohol. He figured he could trade them for any supplies he and his family would need. I've had a couple friends saying that if the "Shit Hits the Fan" they will come knocking on my door. I always say bring food ammo and propane.

I work with a guy that is one of those dude with guns buried and all sorts of crazy stuff. He went on a tangent one day about all the stuff he has and was drilling me about what I was gonna do. He didn’t like my answer of well all you have is pistols and I have a rifle so your stuff will be mine since your house will be my first stop.

There is not a country on this earth more difficult to successfully invade than the US. Yes, we could get bombed, or hit with missiles, but an invading army, it's not going to happen.

I listen to a few of my friends that think about it but are not really pre-war preppers. Some have some freeze dry foods, some have maybe a couple thousand rounds of ammo. We are not concerned about prepping. Being well stocked is a way of life. We've been stuck behind floods for a couple weeks, stranded for over a month with our main road to town washed out and several weeks with limited access to the outside world with no power for around a month due to wild fires. Being able to survive comfortably for a month or so is no biggie. Of course nobody was trying to take my stuff or shooting at us. I could probably deal with that too but it's not something I prepare for.
If we're ever attacked by ground squirrels, I got that covered.

The good news is you are right. The bad news is that wars won’t be fought that way anymore. Easier to watch a country destroy itself from the inside.

I laugh at the prepper idea that folks can "take to the hills" and live off the land in the event of societal collapse. 50 million people with black powder nearly drove nearly every big game species in the country to extinction. Just imagine what 350 million people with modern day technology, and the ability to see at night, would do in a month.


Back in 2016 I bought enough food from mypatriotsupply.com to feed my family for 6 months, because I do believe the ability to hold over while people troubleshoot problems (i.e. a modern day Carrington Event), would be beneficial, but I think if SHTF, those communities that unite as neighbors and try to succeed together, will do far better than the doofus in his cabin with a bottle of ancient age and an AR across his lap. A buddy of mine who was in Iraq kind of observed this phenomenon - communities that stuck together did better than those who didn't - and it's compelling to me.

I figure Armageddon is going to come in the form of a meteorite or Yellowstone blowing up. If my wife and son are close, I am going to get with them, if not I am going to one of my favorite hill tops and watch the ash cloud roll in.

I agree with this. I am by no means a prepper except for guns, aren't we all to an extent. I think having weapons, ammo and food are important as you would have a means to defend yourself and your family but also your resources that you might have as well, like maybe a cattle farmer and his cattle, etc. I think you would have to worry about some of the people that live here already trying to steal resources and without the public services we have in place people probably be more willing to take matters into their own hands. I agree with the comment that it would be easier for a country to destroy itself other than some red dawn event. I think all of the electronic transactions/processes we utilize without thinking twice would be one of the first things to go. If someone were to hack and destroy the infrastructure and people's money would be gone and if you wouldn't have a physical cache of money you would have to barter or be sol. All of these things, sorry to say could probably happen. It's a scary world we live in that's for sure.
