When did you know a hunting partner wasn’t going to last? I’ll go first…

When took a guy out to my camp put him on some game. He showed up empty handed only sporting a cooler with one bag of ice and a twelve pack of beer. Never asked if what he could bring for the weekend or offered to help pay for anything. Road with me to the camp a half a tank of gas away , rode around on my one of my ATVs all weekend burning my gas.

I stopped on the way to camp at a gas station to fill up my atv cans and my truck he never offered any money for gas or to even help me fill them up. He goes into the gas store and buys himself a big two liter bottle of coke and two burritos and never asks me if I needed or wanted anything. Eats them in my truck, drinks out of the coke bottle. Never asked if it was ok that he ate in my vehicle. Just threw his wrappers on my floorboard.

After he kills a few animals he is out of ice so he uses a few bags out of my big cooler I had filled up with ten bags prior to picking him up.

He never lifts a finger to help out at camp or even offer to grab me a beer when he is at the coolers.

I drive him back home he jumps out grabs his gun and cooler. Never asks if he can contribute or reimburse me for anything. Never even thanks me for taking him out he just says” Ok dude see you next time I had an awesome time , cant wait to go again”.

He calls me the week after next and asks me if I’m hunting the coming weekend and wants to know if I will take him and his buddy out if I’m going. It was so outside my normal experience of taking guests out for 20 years I had to just laugh to myself. I told him unfortunately I had other people going with me for the next month of weekends. He called me a few more times after that but I never took the guy again.

Reality was I very likely wouldn't have accepted anything from him anyway. But his sense of entitlement was astonishing. I’m little slow so it took me the whole weekend to figure out this guy wasn't going to cut the mustard as a hunting pard.

Had a few of those over the years. One and done. Some are So self consumed it’s difficult to comprehend

A guy I knew growing up and racing motorcycles against , always a good guy off the track , on the track look out .
Later in life we realized we both had bird dogs so we hunted some hunt farms together . I had a connection to the owner of a Pheasant farm and if we hunted on Monday after a tower hunt we paid for 6 birds but could shoot as many as we wanted . He said he would rather we kept the bird population down so not to promote the coyotes and fox populations .
Any ways , my parents lived next to Manistee national forest and the DNR would do clear cuts each year to promote habitat . They did it randomly and it made great bird hunting , and I had a lot places where the three tier growth was just right each year .

He convinced me to take him one weekend , he had a great dog , and he saw more wild birds that weekend than ever before , Woodcocks and Pat's . He kept saying how much fun and how cool my spot was .
Next weekend he ghosted me , or I ghosted him not sure , but I went solo , I liked it better anyway , and guess who's van was parked at my spot ?
I was pissed , waited for him to come out , him , his son and stepson , I told him what I thought and he tried to laugh it off .
Never hunted together again .

I know we're only a couple of stories in, they're excellent by the way, and there are going to be more good ones.

I just have to say you're some better people than me. None of these fails would have lasted more than the second indication it was going south with me. My tolerance level is low and my willingness for confrontation is high. God bless you all for your patience, calmness and easy going demeanor.

Decided to do a haul road caribou hunt (similarish to TOGIE's) with a guy that I had only met in person for about 20 minutes. Hiked past the rifle line with a few days worth of gear and both killed nice bulls. The next day we each packed our camp and a bit of meat back to the road where he proceeded to tell me that he would not be returning for another trip to get the remaining 4 quarters of his bull (he took backstraps and tenderloins the first trip).

Edit to note that the meat did not go to waste. I went back in and got mine and then I went back again and got his. Saved him from a misdemeanor, fines, jail time, seizure of all of his crap, and not ever being able to hunt Alaska again.

Had a few different experiences that ended hunting with particular individuals, mostly when I was younger.

Had a permission property I used to run my hounds and rabbit hunt, took a buddy with me. Then hear through the grapevine he considered that an open invitation to go there himself without me and without landowner permission.

Had one friend that really liked to hunt but he liked the sport of trespassing just about as much as he enjoyed hunting.

Have run into a number of guys that are thrilled to go hunting so long as you provide the place to hunt and do all of the upfront work and prep. They never seem to reciprocate and take you to one of their spots.

My buddy dragged his brother in law along with us on a Colorado elk hunt. BIL first priority was to stop at the weed dispensary, was stoned all the time, moved like a snail, didn't help with much of anything and was out of cash before we even headed home. Had to borrow cash from my buddy to complete his trip.

Had one guy in deer camp (group of 5) that showed up with only his vehicle, bow and camos. Killed a nice buck out of one of my stands and didn't have a decent light, didn't have a good knife to dress deer with, etc. We were butchering a couple other deer and pretty much took complete care of ours and his too while he screwed around all day burning my propane and doing his European mount. He didn't even have a cooler to haul meat home in so we put it in cardboard boxes along with several bags on my ice. Oh yea ... he didn't provide any groceries either or cook anything. One day we just let dishes pile up to see if he would get the hint to wash them and contribute a little effort. He left with his meat and European and never offered to replace anything he consumed, no cash, etc. The next year he asked when we were supposed to send in for licenses and I informed him our group was already booked. Then he asked if he could stay at the cabin with us and he'd hunt nearby public ground, told him cabin was full. Nice dude, just a brain dead lazy freeloader.

Pretty funny thinking back about all of these. These days I hunt with really good guys and haven't had any such issues for many years.

at least he liked you well enough to want to hunt with you

Never used to be that way, but I align with this more every day.
I used to be very confrontational and thought violence was the last means of communication.
I’m much more calm and rational now .
I subscribed to the philosophy- Never make a situation worse than it already is.
I’d rather just lose a friend than lose a friend plus get arrested .
