What's your average Rifle shot range on an Elk?

Longest 273 yards with my muzzleloader. Shortest 10 yards on a cow with a .300 Win Mag. A bunch between 30 and 150 yards with either a 30-06 or a .300 Win Mag. Most of my rifle hunting has been in the timber and I never had to shoot very far.

1. Cow, 80 yd, Dad's 721 in 30-06. 1 shot, high lung, fell in 80 yds.
2-5: cows, 60-230 yds, Mark X Mauser, 7 Rem mag, 175 Speer Game King handloads, all 1 shot and down within 100 yds.
6: 5 pt bull, same 7mag w handloads, DRT @ 60 yd, running shot.
7-9: cows, same 7/handloads, ranges 70-150, I shot each, dropped in less than 100 yds.
10: cow 150 yds, Stevens 200 in 270 Win, Double Tap 160gr partition. 1st shot dropped her, head still up so shot #2 from 100 yds to back of head. Majority of shots broadside right behind shoulder, 1 frontal shot (w pants around my ankles). The bull fell straight @ the shot, w legs crossed under him. Never found the bullet wound, still have the whole hide w 0 holes. Mystery!

So average: 1 shot w 175 gr 7Rem mag, broadside behind shoulder, 120ish yds, elk traveled between 0 and 100 yd after shot.

I've have seen really good bulls way out there....to far for me to shoot. I consistently shoot at home at 200 yards. I take other practice shots at 300 and 400 yards so I know where and how my rifle hits at those distances. For a November hunt I go to the range every week starting in September.

I generally hunt open country elk. When hunting open country in Wyo the wind is usually howling so it's pretty tough to keep the rifle and bullet from moving for longer range shots. The elk is dead if I can get within 200 yards and a prone shot! I started off as a kid using a 270 but quickly switched to a 300 Weatherby and now a 300 WSM with nosler partitions. My average shot is like a lot of others....around 150 yards. My farthest shot is close to 400. With a little patience it is almost always possible to get within 300 yards where I hunt.

I've taken a couple of bulls up close, 50-60- yds and most of my cows have been at 250 or greater with my 300 wsm, 165 gr grand slams or corelokt ultra's, occasionally I use swift a frames. Most all of our cow hunting is open country so shots up to 350 have been taken. We only take the long shots at bedded or resting animals.

My one elk which I killed this year was right around 55 yards. One shot right through the boiler room with 270. He fell within 25 yards.
