I don't carry a pistol.


but I have heard a lot of bowhunters call their pistol a hole starter.

Handguns are not legal for hunting in Canada but when I was growing up in Montana I always had my dad's K22 in the daypack for grouse. Kept my Highway Patrolman in the saddlebag when on my horse. Never had a gun on the hip except when fly fishing the wilderness. Otherwise it's just extra weight I don't need. 30-06 trumps .357 every time.

The judge is a cool concept but a dumpster fire of a gun. I'd go look at once in person before you decide to buy one. I do carry a 45, but it's a shield.

I've sure taken a bunch of grouse and snakes with my Judge. It's not for protection in my case. In bear country I sometimes carry my S&W mountain gun or my Ruger SRH, but I rely on my rifle.

In December I'll be packing a .22 revolver to Alaska. I have no plans on using it and won't even take ammo for it. I'll be packing it in its own hard lockable case together inside my large gear bag that contains my inflatable kayak to ensure that it makes the Ravn Air flight. Firearms Must Ride but all other bags can be bumped.

Alaska has bumped my rifle twice at this point

Unclear. Both times it arrived on the next flight in, this last flight the counter agent said they load guns last and maybe there wasn’t enough space.

None. Don't need the added weight and in bear country, it's been proven time and again that bear spray is more effective. As an added bonus, bear spray works on human attackers too.

To be clear I am a Spray over pistol person, but I am confident a .44 will work wonders on a human....

It's only the small prop planes that bump gear when weight is an issue.

So does the spray. I learned just how well it works 1st hand 26 years ago when we had to be sprayed before it was issued to us.
