What kind of fish is this?

Whatever it is it would be hella fun to catch on a 2 wt fly rod

It would be interesting to see more of the fish. The descriptions of the fish on the pages I posted have more identification features to rely on. I hope he can catch it again for a possible state record. The ichthyologist would have to make a determination.

As far as color goes, I have seen, Lake Trout, Brown Trout, Brook Trout, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, and Walleye, have some wild variation in their colors. Maybe caused by sun light exposure, surrounding habitat, seasonal marking, etc.

Looks like a hybrid green sunfish to me. They easily hybridize with bluegills. Voracious predators they are!

Looks like a hybrid of a bluegill x green sunfish, albeit a malnourished one.

They had no luck catching the fish again.

The fish is now part of teenage lore in this small town!
