What are your 2026 Outdoor Plans

Applied for a long shot random Wyoming pronghorn tags today. Other last options for extra fun will be my wife’s D,E,A apps in Idaho and anything that pops up on the second draw

I’d like to:

MT Spring Turkey
Ft Peck walleye/northern fishing

3x summer backpacking trips
Maybe one bigger trip to the Bob/Chinese Wall or something.

MT Archery Elk
MT Antelope (fingers crossed)
MT Rifle Deer

5x upland bird hunts in the fall.

Maybe get a kayak to fish some of the local rivers or accessible mountain lakes.
Only got out one for turkeys. Didn’t punch the tag.
Missed Ft Peck. Chores got in the way.

Bought a kayak. The seat is hands down, without a doubt, the most uncomfortable I’ve ever sat in. But it catches fish.

Pup has to get spaid in August. Upland bird opener just took a back seat.

Buddy drew a moose tag, so I might have to adjust my big game plans to help him out. Fingers crossed.

Summer will be prepping my body for the fall. Already got a weekend in of scouting & familiarizing self with my Mt. limited unit.
- Co. muzzleloader antlered elk
- Helping a buddy on Mt. Mnt goat hunt
- Mt. limited elk rifle
- And of course Ohio WT

This fall will be a little crazy hunting. My NV muzzleloader tag is Sept10-Oct4, and my sons tag is Oct5-Nov5. But we also got invited to waterfowl hunt 30,000 acres of rice fields in Northern CA. The Youth hunt will be Sept 19-20 and main season opens Oct 3. You can only hunt this area until it freezes in early November. It will be scouting, rifle practice, more scouting, hunt, hunt, hunt and then slow down while we finish off the waterfowl season back in NV. Oh and maybe some quail and chukar hunting in there too.

KS - elk, whitetail. Archery and rifle for both.

MT - rifle elk (hopefully). Came up bust on the NR general tag draw but my alternate list # is low enough I have a chance. 🤞

I hesitate to put my plans down since my plans always seem to change. I feel like this year's plans might be less likely to change since they are focused on my son's opportunities. Here they are right now:

For sure:
- Take my oldest son out for youth deer season in MN. It's his first year that he's old enough to hunt the family farm.
- Take him out again for the regular firearms season. Party hunting is legal in MN (plus you can basically shoot unlimited deer in our area), so I'm considering my tag his, and hopefully he'll be able to put it on a good one.
- Continue to build my points in WY and CO, though I'm not sure when or if I'll ever use them now that my sons are getting old enough to hunt

Likely:
- Take my son on his first western hunt.
- Will have him apply in AZ for elk, deer, pronghorn, and we'll see what else. Not likely for a tag but will try.
- Will have him apply in NM for elk, deer, oryx
- If he doesn't get any of those, will likely either do OTC deer in MT or OTC bear in NM for him

Possibly:
- Have my son hunt archery deer season in MN (crossbow)
- Have my son turkey hunt in MN

Not likely:
- I will put in for OIL tags for moose in CO and NH, but not likely to draw.

Not sure:
- Still deciding on having my dad put in for elk in CO to burn his points. Not likely my wife would allow me to do a trip out there with him AND my son, but he's also getting up there in age where I don't think he'd be able to go much longer.

I am unlikely to be the shooter for many years to come, and I'm excited about that. Hoping to save up for a nice camera to film some of our adventures now.
Now that many draws are done it is looking like probably the following:

Start off with a NM deer hunt at end of September/beginning of October. My son drew a youth tag in the SW part of the state. This will be his first serious big game hunt. His other hunts have been randomly going out and sitting in WI without much of a plan.

Next, come back for youth deer season in MN. It's my son's first year that he's old enough to hunt in MN. Hoping to have one somewhat patterned for him.

Next, hunt the regular firearms season in MN. I will likely be focusing again on my son's opportunities. Party hunting is allowed in MN, so I will be hoping to get my son a chance at another buck (or his first if he doesn't get one in the youth season).

Head to CO for 4th season deer for my dad's tag.

My son also drew a youth cow elk tag in AZ, but I'm thinking we probably won't do that one. Between that and NM, he said he prefers the NM hunt. The dates line up that we could do NM then drive right to AZ for that hunt, but I'm not sure I want to put pressure on him/us to try to get two hunts in. Taking time and enjoying the one hunt seems more pleasant right now. I also applied for him for youth deer in the same AZ unit/timeframe. If he draws that, we may have to reconsider.

Lining up to be a season full of special memories.
