Weekend house guests

Yeah it really ain’t much bigger than the cubs and the cubs are probably 60

Yeah, the video is really telling, the arm rests on those Adirondack chairs are probably 24 inches tall, so those cubs are likely 18-20 to the top of their back. Honestly they aren't much bigger than my corgi and he weighs 22lbs. She looks significantly smaller than my BIL malamute next to that chair, and his dog weighs 120lbs.

I posit that bears are the most misjudged north american wild game animal, I bet the first thought of hunters who walk up on a bear is, "wow that's small, it's not like a big dog." Certainly that has been my experience. I think the outliers are probably either very experienced hunters who know how to judge bears and go after big boars, or people hunting over bait and have that big barrel to give them some size context.

Also there is so much variability spring-> so the bear above might be 95lbs in the spring and 135-140 in late September.

I bet this dumpster diver was in the 225-250lb range.

Would love to see a thread where the Saskatchewan crew post live pictures of bears and then their actual measured weight.

Absolutely the case. I have a friend who outfits for bears in northern Manitoba. He has had crews of guys come in for their first bear hunt and all they all leave with 90 pounders due to misjudging size. Bad part is those same guys came back the next year to get bigger ones and ended up taking home another round of 70-110 pound bears.

I've taken 2 bears in that 100-140lb range so I'm not throwing stones from my glass house, at the same time when pretty much any hunter guesstimates the weight of a bear I always subtract 100lbs, if it's a non hunter then 200lbs.

Unsecured garbage where da' bears live. A tale of man's supreme intelligence - as old as suburban sprawl............................

Kind of like feral pigs, when I worked at my uncle’s wild game processing shop people would swear that the pigs were 300-500lbs even when the scale showed 100-150

The chairs are low, about 16" @ the arm. Onpoint is eponymous in naming the issue: Many of our neighbors do not secure trash cans. CPW and the City of CO Springs have tried for years to get voluntary cooperation from citizens, now they are pursuing legislation requiring trash cans to be moved to curbs no earlier than 5 am on pickup day, or bearproof containers if left out. This family is not a rarity in our 'hood, there are others, and solos as well.

This family was in our front yard for 8 hr, cubs nursing, cubs up in trees, drank the birdbath dry. They gathered a small crowd, including a CPW staffer who watched for 20 min, concluded it was all good as nobody was approaching the bears. Our uphill nextdoor neighbors do AirB&B, their guests would not enter the house w the bears in the yard. A neighbor soon escorted them in and shared a little Ursus 101 w them. Curious what their feedback will say on the host's page?

Less than 200 pounds, you could easily stuff her in a regular sized trash can. It's when you would have a hard time stuffing them in a 55gallon barrel is when you get excited!
