Have this permit in my pocket, feeling a little intimidated. I don’t know the area as well as I’d like, and the water works has thrown a wrench in my plans to change that all summer. Working out of state during the week hasn’t helped. Maps and imagery have become my new best friends.

Made a trip in August when the forecast finally called for a dry weekend. Woke up to rain falling on my face, 2:00 am, 3 miles from the truck. Perfect. The drive out was an ordeal. But I did find a couple of places that look worthwhile. And as always, the scenery didn’t disappoint.

Finally was free on a dry day yesterday so headed down to wander around. What I saw: scenery, birds, deer, sheep. What I didn’t: elk.
Windy, muddy, and warm isn’t ideal. Still, had a great day looking at beautiful country and shortened my list of spots to check.

Found a sheep superhighway along a ridge crest.

So far I’ve seen more sheep than elk. Maybe I’m doing it wrong. If only I had that tag...😁

The Breaks is some incredible country. Next on my MT Elk list for sure.

Stay on them!

Fantastic country I do love the breaks they're something magical for sure. Ive spent a fair amount of time in 22 but haven't been for a few years. It's huge country and elk can move and hide like it's nothing it seems like. If you wanna PM me i'll be happy to share some of my experiences. Good Luck!

Sent you a PM as well, you’re gonna have a blast!

And curse out the breaks plenty of times walking those oh so fun hills🤣😂

Good luck and hoping you have some success!
