I shot two elk this year with these. Not really impressed with them but both elk did die. Only one was recovered in time to salvage the meat. The other wasn’t found till 5 days later. Admittedly, it was a gut shot and my fault but there was never a drop of blood so we weee unable to track it.

That broad head was perfectly fine and could be resharpened. There is zero damage to it.

The other elk ran 200 yards on a double lung with trackable blood. She took about 30-45 min to die.

Here is the broad head. It was new from the package and it only got shot into the elk. I
Was it a failure?

I'd say that's more chatter than I would have anticipated, but I think the Slick Trick blades are intended to be replaced after shooting through an animal. Did that head center up a rib or something?

Not a rib, went in between and caught part of the off shoulder. Passed thru, she fell, snapped the arrow shaft, and pushed back in to the chest cavity.

I think just cheap steel. They both died so id say they’re not a “failure”.
I’ve shot through deer full pass with Montec and could literally shoot another deer with them if I needed. Same with an antelope.
Bro shot an elk full pass with QAD exodus and thing was like new also. Now when I’ve had broadheads stay in and they run with blades in the body, they look like that for sure…

I’ve never seen one roll the edge like that. This is only my 3rd kill with them. 2 out of the 3 you would never know they went thru an animal. This one is completely different.

I’ve always used Muzzy or G5 before this. I’ve seen broken blades but never one that rolled the edge.

And this is why people hate bowhunting.
Good thing bad shots and losing critters never happens with rifles and muzzleloaders

I definitely wouldn’t call either situation a failure. I’ve seen the viper tricks do really well and still buy them for my wife. The last elk she shot was hit in the femur and the broadhead looked better than that for edge retention

That's not a failure. As stated above, it's cheap steel. I shot an elk with the same broadhead this year at 60 yards, got a pass through. I didn't find my arrow, however I did find a piece of blade just behind the front shoulder while cutting up meat.

Uneducated guess blades needed to be sharper. Cheap steel won’t matter if they didn’t bend or break. Sharp blades do more damage even if you pushed a dull one thru the elk a sharp blade still cuts better. Unless you hand sharpened them that’s my guess even new factory edges sucks on some heads

Those bad outcomes happen at a higher percentage with sharp sticks.

I was thinking about this again this morning while getting stuff ready. I think moving forward when people wanna talk about broadheads I’m gonna recommend getting something you can sharpen past factory sharpness

That is original why went to the G5. They were easy to sharpen, but I found that they bent the tips pretty easily with bone contact. Saw Randy was using these a while back and bought a set to try. The originals I had did fine on a deer and it was quite impressive. Then my stuff sat for a long time and I drew this elk tag. The new replacement blades I bought seem to be crap.

I am back to looking for a new sharpenable head.

I’d highly recommend sevr they sell a jig to sharpen them. My arrow was about 25 yards past my moose this year. If you aren’t opposed to mechanical

That’s probably a good practice. In years past though, that was one of the selling features of Slick Trick- they were known for being super sharp right out of the package and they used high quality steel.

The original owner sold the company a number of years ago, and that reputation has waned as far as I can tell. Perhaps deservedly so.

I shot the raptor trick for about 10 years and switched this year because I can’t get them past factory sharp they pin the blades to the head. Sevr makes it easy to turn into scalpels

Have you noticed a difference in blades from 10 years back in terms of sharpness out of the package at all?

I’m down to my last pack of the “old” Standard 100 blades. It pains me to consider moving away from the head, but I’m kicking around a move to the QAD Exodus next year for this very reason.

The Outdoor Group Wal-Martifies everything they touch. CBE and Scott have also taken a noteworthy downturn since their acquisition by TOG too.

I haven’t noticed any change at all in in the head. I just noticed they aren’t crazy sharp. That said most animals I shot with that tip I had pass thru on. My last bull with it was 10.5 year old elk and it pushed thru at 65
