Turkeys

Used .410 TSS #9 with a Red Dot first time this year and was impressed as hell! Right shoulder failing so decided to give it a go. Called in a Tom from long ways in wind with custom box call that was retirement gift in 2012. Haven't used it much, wife liked it as decoration. Decided to give it a run and sure was sweet music! Tom followed script perfectly and walked out into clover plot that was just cleared up. Stoned him at 38yds and never flopped a wing! Recoil nonexistent. Yeah I know shooting at animal blah blah blah. My shoulder says otherwise with 3" Turkey loads.

Pretty cool development here on the home front. Monday morning my wife got up at 5 and was in the woods by 6:00 by herself sitting in a blind behind some decoys calling. This is a first for her...she didn't see anything but says she is going back tomorrow morning. She has that turkey fever!!

Had a pretty cool hunt with my 85 yr old pops this morning. He hasn't hunted birds or really anything for the last several years but bought a tag this spring and said he wanted to go.
I picked him up at 6:00 this morning because he didn't want to wake up any earlier which was fine by me. We parked the truck, and he did his best to shuffle down an old logging road for a couple hundred yards in his Carhart cammo to a spot we hoped to call from.
I got a response with my box call from about a quarter mile away and we spent the next 2 hours sitting with me calling off and on before I could coax this Tom into range. The little 410 and some #9's did the rest.
We had a brief celebration and I was able to get a few pics. He wanted to carry the bird back to the truck himself so out of necessity, and to keep him from falling, he borrowed my vest and was able to shuffle back to the truck with his prize.
I hope it's not his last hunt but if so he definitely was a happy soul this morning.

Congrats to you both!

Opening day for me today. Alarm went off at 4:00. Sunrise was at 5:48. He was dead by 5:58. I made it to work 20 minutes early. There was zero gobbling on the roost so I just set off walking and calling. I got an answer quickly. He came in gobbling and strutting with two others. They got nervous when there was no hen to be found but, unfortunately for him, it was too late.

I filled my turkey tag this morning, after spotting a nice tom from my living room window. It was raining, and he had 3 hens with him, so I watched him for 20 minutes, trying to convince myself not to try and harvest him. Well, rain stopped, and the sun came out, just like a sign from above. I had to wait for him to get over a little rise so I could even leave the house. A 45 minute stalk, and I laid him out with my old New England Firearms 12 Ga. Ive decided that those early morning wake ups really arent worth it, as hes the 4th tom Ive shot in 5 years between 830- 1030 am.160a6e80-d3db-476d-8761-90d77a6abf9f.jpg
