Torn Toenail

So, my GSP has an autoimmune things where his nails are really bad. Like, break off and bleed everywhere bad...

The thing that seems to matter most for us is giving him an adult fish oil oil every meal. We just get him the ones from Costco but whatever. However, too much fish oil can lead to loose stool so we also give him some raw oatmeal to bulk up his stool. Ask me why...

Anyhow, a lot of fish oil has really helped with the bad toenail problem.

Good luck! Bad toes with a dog is a bitch...

You see what I did there? ...

Every working dog should take it, especially if they aren't super oily coated to begin with. Great for skin all around.

Get on some kind of glucosamine chew as well. Helps with joints & keeps your dog in the field longer (more years).

I can't imagine having to deal with it all the time. Real pain especially when they are used to daily hikes. She's not a happy camper. I'll have to try the fish oil to help as a preventative, not enough to need oatmeal though

Thanks for the reminder on the glucosamine. We have cosequin that I forgot about. Should get her started on it again!

Just wanted to give another update in case anyone else is ever looking for info on torn toenails. Just over 3 weeks since her toenail was removed from the vet. At the three week mark it was looking pretty well healed minus most of the nail still missing. Started her on some smaller off leash walks and then her first short hunt this morning! We have found a dog sock with a boot over top to be the best option so far. Kept her to just under 5 miles this morning and checked her foot a couple of times during the hunt. No visible irritation during or at the end which makes me excited about bird season again. Gonna keep easing her back in and hopefully around pheasant opener she will be back in shape and ready to rock!!
