Torn Toenail

Bird dogs will go until they can't. It's your job to be their brain and tell then when to whoa.

Torn nails can be a bummer, but wait until it's healed a bit and she's not on it. I'd give it a week or two for rest then re-evaluate.
So true! She would likely run until her foot fell off.

Good thing we have some Trazodone to mellow her out as needed. She gets crazy without her daily exercise. Zoomies may be our biggest issue for the next week or two.

We went through two TPLO surgeries back-to-back last year. I've changed my tune on trazadone, it's good stuff!

Don't forget the mental stimulation though. That'll help tire that pup out if it's having to think! Most bird dogs aren't known for their complex emotional intelligence.

Ooooh…two TPLO surgeries sounds rough. A friend of ours had one done on our dogs litter mate. It’s a long recovery. Trazadone may have saved everyone🤣.

can you link up what you have? We haven't found a boot that seems to work well

These are what we bought. Went through two sets over 12 years. We did tape them on- vet wrap on leg/upper foot, then boot, then duct tape boot to vet wrap. Blaze pink duct tape aids visibility, and looks like a flashy racehorse 🤣

These made a huge difference in her case to prevent foot injuries in crusty snow, but also used them as she was recovering from a few cuts and little injuries too. But only used them when necessary, not every day wear.

I’ve had hounds lose toenails and I give them 2 weeks minimum. If it’s not covered by a new nail they get another week. Hope everything heals quickly for you.
X3. Went through it last year when our pup (just over a year old) ripped a nail completely off. Bled like a mother. Styptic powder was probably the wrong choice, but I did it. Gauze, vet wrap, and bitter apple spray seemed to work for a couple days. Meds helped, leashed walks, lots of patience, and all grew back as normal.

Best of luck!

I’ll have to give the bitter apple spray a try when we are past the cone. Thanks!

order some booties: dogbooties.com order a few proper size and a few the next size up, heavy duty ones. pad it, put the bootie over it and see how she gets around the house/yard. would still have to go easy but might be good to go sooner than it would be completely healed

Thanks! Just got a larger size that fits over the bandage. Gonna give them a try on a short walk today.

She is pretty used to booties as they get used some in the winter with crunchy conditions or if the snowballs get too bad even with mushers secret. I'll have the camera ready just in case though!

Starting to dry up nicely now....finally. Just have to keep her from licking it again. She is really hating the cone now. They sure do have a way of making you feel guilty when you put it on them.

I've been getting lots of grinding done on her other feet. Time to get her quick to recede a bit so I can keep her toenails short. Don't want another injury this season.

I've used Lewis boots for years.....with proper installation they don't fall off . baby sock underneath prevents rubbing wear. Dogs adapt to them quickly. Used Chukar hunting and in AZ to keep pads from wearing off in the sharp rocks.

Quick update. It has been 2 weeks since the torn toenail. We did have a couple little setbacks. A poop zoomie session ended up in a little bleeding and then she licked her bandage until soaking wet when we were giving her some time away from the cone. Only 1/8" or so of toenail growth back so far. Was really hoping for 2-3 weeks, but at this rate it's going to take a long time for that nail to regrow and be 100%.

PSA - Get the grinder or clippers out before your next hunt!!
