The big 18 and adult things?

You can’t cross state lines. You can drive in any state that rule is intended to keep you from long hauling not driving a line truck. Texas pay scale is trash and it’s kinda the laughing stock of the trade for skill set. I’d highly recommend staying away from that state
I thought you couldnt cross state lines and have a texas cdl and use it somewhere else but I always wondered how everyone else did lol. Are you talking union pay or non? I applied to all the groundman positions for pike and native and mastec but I think union is up around 55 or 60 a hour? Im not to sure. I always heard Florida or Georgia was the laughing stock of the trade

If you start driving in Montana you can’t drive across a state line in a cdl vehicle. You have to stay inside it but you can drive in any state you just can’t drive across the line it’s a weird rule but don’t let it deter you from applying in other states. I’d advise you only look for union jobs due to pay and training. I worked both sides of that fence and wouldn’t go back to non union job even if it paid more.

Union always made more sense to me especially being Houston is local 66 which ive heard has good work. Thats crazy on the license

What he said!!!! I say this from experience I'm 72 and should listened to one of my supervisors when I was in my early 20's. Start putting some aside from each paycheck starting with your first check. I didn't and the money I wasted is hard to think about without cringing. Temporary fun vs long term security should be a no brainer. But the young brain has a hard time thinking that way, at least mine did :(
I too suffer from poor decisions in my youth , but boy what a ride ! 😝

It really isn’t just because you have a cdl doesn’t mean you know how to do it. By making people not be able to travel across lines it makes it so they don’t take off in a big rig solo. I get a lot of new guys on my crew to kinda help them adjust to the size of the equipment and just being around it before we put them into a digger truck

I would have pinned the average age on here closer to 4 than 40.

At your age I worked on building lifetime wealth one small step at a time. This means doing things that get you ahead both at 5 years, 10 years 20 years and the rest of your life. Figure out how to work a job that pays well enough to payoff a house and stash some money aside at the same time as being able to fit in a few long weekends for hunting. Dont take a corporate salary job they will suck your life away. Buy as many things as you can at the bottom of the depreciation curves. An example of this would be a vintage hunting rifle for $300 with a scope on sale for $200 that will outlive you instead of putting $1,800 into a rifle and scope you will sell for $700 in 3 years when you change your mind on the caliber. Im still hunting with a shotgun and rifle that I bought each for $300 new in college. Heck im still shooting ammunition i bought on sale after the obama bubble burst. This applies to all gear really. Every year here facebook market place is full of guys who have never hunted, watched tv, went to scheels and signed up for the store credit card. They then buy the best of everything, go hunting twice, scare off the elk, and assume they need expensive lease land to see elk. By the end of the season they are taking what ever anyone will offer on that twice used gear. Dont look past hunting shops in small mountain towns. When they switch from summer hours to off season hours they are in the slow down and hurting for cash. This is the time to trade or buy. Another easy way to grt ahead and have more money for hunting is to buy an old pickup that runs well for $5k instead of spending $60k on a new f150 that you might out grow in a few years. The savings you pay on insurance alone will finance your entire hunting season. Instead of putting money into a 401k and watching it crash, find the banks paying 4%+ on cds and use the money to pay off a house. these are the sorts of things ive noticed people do who are truly well off at 30 and 40 vs those who are sinking in debt and have no free time in their 40s. once you understand the financial concept of buy back your time, and realize how to calculate how extra spending on things that dont break you, equate to how many extra days a year working, this process becomes a light at the end of the tunnel. Last year i put my whole tax return into a cd. Ive put every dime of over time pay into cds all year. The interest paid so far this year on those pays for all of the tags and ammunition i will use hunting this year and then some. The money i save annually on insurance alone now that i sold my newer pick up and bought one from 20 years ago that runs just as well, is enough to pay for fuel for a round trip to the mountains for me every single weekend of the summer and fall and then some. And i do not have time to make it out that much.

I sure wouldn’t put all my money into CDs, but that’s me.

I agree on buying used and keeping stuff for a long time. But, at the end of the day thoughtful and wise investment planning has a far bigger impact on long term wealth than if you buy a new gun or a used one.

Alot of good advice already and good for you for even thinking about this stuff at 18. Definitely agree with investing early and often. Also, have balance in everything. Tomorrow is not guaranteed.

I'll tell you what I've told my two boys. Do something that will one day allow you to be your own boss and, if possible, that makes money even if you're not there. Most of my buddies I grew up with own their own businesses (contracting, plumbing, electric, tile, dentistry, law, finance, accounting, etc). By and large, those people are financially set by age 50 or earlier and have the flexibility and time to enjoy life while still making a very good living. It takes some risk on your part and can be very lean in the early years, but it can be worth it in the end. Just a thought.

Well glad to say ive had my 18th birthday on wensday. Been in this group for about 2 years ish? And learned and hell of alot and met alot of great people so that leads me to ask since most of everyone here is of a age older then 40 whats some things you wished you would have done when you was 18? Whats some things I should do? Whats some important things? Ive got the basics half way down but not much more lol. Ive already decided definitely ready for work which im tore between a few different things but im putting alot of focus on coming to texas and I really wouldnt mind working on a hunting ranch(seen a wild zebra on one) if anyone is from the west TX area and has any leads on a ranch needing help i would appreciate a little word. Looking to at the oilfield which seems kinda cool but I figure theres gotta be more to turning 18 then just work? I know I can now buy rifles but rifle money isnt in the agenda with going to texas so oh well. I believe I can gamble? Which is probably a dangerous thing to do lol. Turning 18 is new and definitely odd, I thought there would be more to it but so far it seems normal unless im forgetting to do something thats important. Officially have had 2 birthdays here and ready for some more (I just like cake and ice cream).
Don't gamble, INVEST.
Don't drink alcohol. No tobacco. No drugs. Anything you have to inhale other than air is just BAD. It is all just fancy poison.
Use sunscreen on exposed skin.
Get a good woman with the same goals and stick like glue.
Don't drink any kind, flavor, brand or color of soda. Drink water, milk, ice tea.
Don't buy "collectable" stuff. Collect MONEY and buy GOOD stuff. Buy ONE good one and you don't need a pile of cheap ones. One good knife, one good vehicle I didn't say NEW, one good rifle.
You don't have to make EVERY MISTAKE I MADE JUST TO LEARN SOMETHING FOR YOUR SELF. If the cars coming toward on the highway have their wipers on, you can figure it is raining ahead.

Correct on CD's.

That kind of advice, while better than stuffing cash in a shoe box, only tells me how little the guy offering that advice knows about investing.

Sure, in retirement having 18 months in tiered CD's is fine for living expenses/cash flow. NO way that I don't always have 60% of my portfolio in the S&P even in retirement.

If my retirement horizon is beyond 4-5 years, 100% in the S&P.

I was always taught to save and was afraid of stocks because quite frankly I knew nothing about them and was always under the perception i could lose all my savings. 2020 to present inflation did a number on me. No risk no reward. I still keep a good chunk in cd's but thats my 6 month emergency money. Worst case If I cant work I forfeit the interest on the cd's. In the scheme of things in that instance thats not shit to worry about.
