Well season was short but sweet for me here in Ohio. I saw this bird Thursday and Friday at 8:45 in the morning, same spot. He was in the back portion of a field right outside the gate of a plant I run. Luckily, the land owner lets me turkey hunt.
I told the guys at work if he was out there this morning, I was taking some comp time and going after him. 8:45 this morning, he was there strutting around. There was only one good way in....drop down into a creek bed that runs around the back of the field.
The hillside between the field is more or less cliff face and covered in thick shrubbery. I knew there were a few deer trails coming right up through a cut to the corner of the field close to where he was. I ended up missing the deer trail and coming back to it. I got about 25 yards from the edge of the field and actually heard one strumming I was that close. He was coming down another deer trail strutting and I never did see him. He gobbled down next to the creek. I worked my way up to the edge of the field to a tree with the intent on calling him back up, thinking that this was the gobbler from the field. It wasn't! He was still stutting 20 yards out. Somehow I worked myself in between two toms without spooking either. I waited for this one to present a good shot. 17.5 lbs, 10.75 inch beard. First mature gobbler that i have killed or saw that had zero spurs or sign of them! It has been a great season for me. My wife is 7 months pregnant but something tells me she'll be wanting to sit a blind and bag her one. Good luck to everybody still trying to fill tags
