When they brought them out to NM to start practicing austere location landing, I can’t tell you how many engines we crapped out from……. Tumbleweeds…..you can keep them...lol got some experience with them as well including watching one lose a engine in a hover on approach and have nasty hard landing. better rides than some other options but i never was a fan
I get what you mean though. The design was scary. Maintenance hours verse each flight hour were astronomical.
Growing up on 53s and transitioning to the CVs was definitely eye opening.
I got stranded one time out in the middle of the AZ desert because we got a chip detection flag multiple times, so the new guy just dropped us straight down and we bounced.
When that happened I experienced one of the most expensive pizza deliveries to date. One CV went back to Vegas to grab some engine folks and the other went to an airstrip about 30 miles away, got us dominos, dropped it off, then went back home.
