I thought it was skunk cabbage but, based on your question, I looked up “false hellebore”, and I think you are right and I was wrong.

It’s poisonous. Pretty white flowers. I didn’t realize how widespread it was. Aren’t you east coast or no.

Yes, I am in West Virginia. I am pretty sure I have seen the same thing, or something very similar, while spring bear hunting in North Idaho.
