I know we have an exotic/hog hunting forums, but seriously who ever actually spends any time there? Besides, I'm new to hunting wild pigs, so I'd feel out of place with all the expert pig hunters I suppose. I did run to Texas this weekend and managed to put a few on the ground though. ;)

Thank you and come back and get some more.:D:D:D

congrats on a truck load. Looks like fun

That's a lot of pork! Congratulations. Tell us more about the hunt - night hunting, stands, feeders? Did you take a lot of the meat home? Wild pig and elk are my son's two favorite meats.

California Hunter, the entire hunt was all spot and stalk with no high fences, completely free range. All done in the day time and without any kind of feeders.

What a truck load!
Congrats

What is the average shot distance on a hunt like that, in open country?

So give us the details! Or are you taking cues from Moosie and just teasing us? ;)

I am not one who cares much about how non-native game is taken, so I'm not looking to argue about anything - I was just curious. Did you bag them all yourself or was there a group of you? Did you use your .257 Wthby?

California hunter, not trying to pull a Moosie, just busy and still a little worn down from the trip. I hunted with with Toby Joe Truby an outfitter out of Amarillo. I did not kill all the pigs. There were 3 to 5 of us hunting over the two days. We killed and stacked 20 pigs, lost a few that were injured and we couldn't recover, and we all missed a few. Anyone that has ever hunted pigs that have been pressured, knows that you might get one standing shot, and then all heck breaks loose. About 2/3 rds of those pigs were shot while they were running. They can take a hit and keep on truck'en. They were also a lot faster than I thought they would be. I shot them with several different rifles. I personally used a 6.5mm-300WSM, 6mm-284, and a 264 Win Mag. I also was handed a 22-250 once but I can't recall whether I shot it at a pig or not. Sometimes things were so chaotic and the action so fast that it blurrs together. It's not a hunt for those with slow reflexes, or those that like to take a long time to set up for every shot. Some other rifles used on the hunt by my partners were a 7mm08, 6mmRem, 257STW, and a 7mmRUM. During a moment of boredom I also wrecked a pigeons day with a .223. T'was good times all around if you weren't a pig or a pigeon. :D

Sounds like a great time! Out here, they constitute the most common big game animal, so I have shot more of them than anything else. Like you said, they can soak up some bullets. My expereince, though, has been that if you were able to set up a good shot and hit them well the first time, they weren't hard to kill. But if you wounded one, they could be VERY hard to put down for the final count. Also, like elk, they move faster than you think when they are just walking. They can really scoot when excited.

Now that I think about it, I can't recall a pig that I didn't shoot with a .30-06 or .300 Win Mag, except one that I finished off with a .44 mag. I may have to rectify that - I think my .358 needs to shoot one.

Yes, we could usually set up for a good first shot. Got caught off guard a couple times, but if we saw them first we could usually set up. Once that first shot goes off though, it's pure madness and they'd scatter like quail.

Damn I need to get back down there for some of that. It's been a few years now. I really like the meat of the smaller ones too.

If you passed through OKC without saying hello then we have issues.

Ovis, I flew to Texas from Great Falls. I'll tell ya the travel getting to Texas and back was almost a bigger adventure than the hunt. I'm talking delayed flights, cancelled flights (due to the big snow storms in Colorado, Utah, Montana, and even Texas) and re-routing flights. I sometimes wondered if I would ever get there or back home. To top it all off, in my hurry to get through security on the way home, I failed to notice a live .264 Win. Mag round in my pocket. Lemme tell ya, that will get you some personal and undivided attention from about everyone within hearing distance of the security check. They had to hold my flight and everything while they cleared my good name and made sure I wasn't part of some terrorist plot to bring down the Huoston airport with a single loaded round of ammunition. Actually they were pretty decent about it, all things considered, and said it happens quite often with hunters. They got me through as quickly as they could considering all the procedures and paper work. The worst part is when I stepped on the plane. I had the furthest seat in the back. You know the one, that little single seat in front of the bathroom. Yup, I had to walk past everyone on the plane. They all got a good look at the jerk that made them sit there and wait. I used to be one of those passengers that cussed those people I had to wait for. Methinks I will be far more understanding in the future.

During a moment of boredom I also wrecked a pigeons day with a .223. T'was good times all around if you weren't a pig or a pigeon.

Had the same thing happen to me 2 yrs ago. Forgot about my cartidge case in my backback that had 3 live rounds of 300 ultra mag! Luckily the the female officers Dad had just been hunting the same area that I was and was very polite. said I could go back and check them into my check in bag or they could disspose of them for me. let them disspose of them.

Still about a month later got a very official looking letter from Homeland Security saying that all checked out and no further action will be taken in the case? Guess they keep the incedent on a file.

When I was unpacking my carry-on bag in South Africa, I found a live .38 Spl cartridge in the side pocket. I guess it was fortunate that I also had several AA batteries in the same pocket of the bag, and when it went through the x-ray machine that it just looked like it was one of the batteries. I would really have disliked being pulled off the plane in Dakar, for example. Hell, I might still be there.....
