I got back this past Saturday night. We hunted 2 1/2 days and got fed up with the wind/cold/snow/fog, so we left early. But, not before I tagged my first merriams. The birds would not make so much as a peep for us once they got down from their roosts. It made it extremely tough to find them, especially being our first time hunting out there. The bird I got made the mistake of roosting right above a road. We got him to gobble after he flew up for the night and the next morning we lucked out and set up right where he decided to land.
We started in the northern hills and couldn't find a bird to save our lives. We moved farther south and had more encounters. Overall we had a blast and I'd love to go back, but only with better weather. It definitely beats sitting in a blind all day in Minnesota! My buddy and I hiked over 28 miles in those 2 1/2 days that we hunted.
