It's my favorite week to hunt whitetails, even if it has been below zero. I went out solo today. Had a good hunt and shot a little buck for the freezer. Dragged it back to the rig, only to find the door locks frozen shut. Happily, I remembered the candle in my survival kit. I warmed the lock with that and popped it open. Lighter was not enough -- kept blowing out. Needed that candle. Not a survival situation by any means, but good to remember my Eagle Scout motto: Be prepared.

Thanks. My friend had his camper lock freeze. I hadn't thought of using a candle.

One of the most miserable experiences I've had was trying to thaw my truck out to get in it. We were parked mid day on top of a knob glassing. Saw elk, bailed off, killed an elk and drug it a couple miles down a drainage. By the time I hiked back up to the pickup it was 10 pm and temperatures were hovering around -10. That knob was getting absolutely pelted with wind all day. It took us the better part of an hour in that god awful windchill with lighters and trying to pry to get the pickup open.

Good thing your survival kit wasn't locked inside your truck!
