Was working today with a colleague and we were doing a botanical study that required us to ponder the identity of a fern. As we kneeled by the plant for I would say a minute or two, a black bear silently (and I mean silently) had snuck in 10 yards behind us and stole my colleague's lunch out of his bag. When I stood and noticed the bear, he had already eaten granola bars and was coming back for seconds. He was totally unafraid of us and it took some yelling and stick throwing to get him to leave the area of the bag and head off. I kept after him for 20-30 yards and finally hit him in the rump with a tossed stick which got him moving for good. Anybody else running into such sneaky bears this summer?
