What is everyone using for an early season sleeping bag ? I’m thinking about getting a down bag for September

I have an REI magma 15 degree back and am not super impressed. If I had it to do over I would spend the money on something better. As the down moves around it gets a lot of cold spots.

I struggle with mummy bags because I get claustrophobic in them. I tried a Nemo Disco and like that it was a little more open but still light. I haven't used it much yet. So far I like it other than the zipper snags more than a quality bag should.

If it is not going to get below about 35 degrees I use an Ember Quilt.

I am the same way. Trying to move at night and cant. uggh. My go to system is a 30degree bag. Nothing crazy. I then have a fleece sleeping bag the company I used to work for gave as a promo.

chilly-sleep in fleece inside the unzipped 30degree bag
freezing-sleep in fleece inside zipped 30degree bag

gap temps and below freezing I use my base layer

All my bags are down, whether it be for Hawaii at sea level or Alaska in winter.
I have numerous bags in 20* increments from thin as a sheet to -20*
When I drove from California to The Arctic in late August I had 4 sleeping bags for the different climates.

Just found humor in you bringing 4 different sleeping bags on a trip. Hey if you've got the room then you may as well.

I use my (IIRC) -20 Kelty down mummy for everything during hunting trips...even (and sometimes especially) hotels.

Actually it was 8 sleeping bags. His & Hers.
33 day roadtrip starting out 119* in SoCal desert to the Arctic Ocean in September has a lot of variables.

Sierra Designs 35* quilt bag hybrid thing. It's an odd duck, but I keep reaching for it out of several other options so I guess I like it.

I dont have the money for 4 sleeping bags, but I understand that logic. I would be happy with 2 on a budget!

Right now I have one and I jumped on the quilt train. Was very leery at first. Now Im in my third season and Im pretty stoked with it. I got the hammock gear burrow top quilt 20* with 2oz overfill. Paired with the thermarest xtherm nxt sleeping pad, its been very warm. Total weight is 24oz for the quilt, 18oz for the pad. Im average height and weight with broad shoulders but sleep on my side or stomach so I ordered it all large/wide. The pad n bag go inside my borah gear bivy so that adds a tiny bit of warmth.

Above 50* its hot and I barely cover myself with it. At 40* I'm still too warm so its loose to let drafts in. 30* I use the pad attachments to keep out drafts and its finally comfortable. Its rated comfort temp is 20* but with overfill it surpasses that. Im comfy and can wear a light base layer to bed. Ive only had it out once below that but Im confident in it down to 10*, 0* if I wear all my clothes. I will also cheat and use a wood stove in the tipi but I dont rely on it for warmth all night.

I can never go back to a sleeping bag now. Im warmer, carrying less weight, and I can roll around without getting tangled or feeling claustrophobic. Ideally I would at least have a 40* bag too but this works for all seasons for now.
