Shoulder Surgery

View attachment 403334

Well, I finally did it - rotator cuff repair, labral tearing/fraying repair, tendonosis, and shoulder decompression/bone spur removal. While it sucks that I had to sacrifice the last half or so of ski season, the timing is such that I should be doing pretty well by next hunting season. I'm about 2 weeks post-op at this point. Loosing my mind from boredom and sleep depravation. I'm told I should be able to bowhunt again, once all healed up and rehabed, so that's encouraging - haven't been able to effectively do much with a bow for the last several years. 👍
I’m down for the count right now as well , but my recovery is 4-6 weeks sounds like , started having heel pain in late October 24 and like a guy just put it off and dealt with it , by October of 25 I knew I needed surgery for what ever it was but I wasn’t gonna miss hunting season , figured I’d suffered this long another few months ain’t gonna make a difference

After X-rays and an MRI the jury was still out on what was growing in my right heel , had my exploratory surgery earlier this week and they pulled a 1.18 inch lipoma out of my heel ! Crazy

I’m sure everyone will feel sorry for me having to sit on the couch for all of March Madness 🏀 ha ha ha 😂

Looking forward to hiking again later this year, I love to just go exploring in new spots didn’t hike at all last year till hunting season and I was usually limping a half mile in for the rest of that day in the field ….. yee Yee

Get well soon @Brian in Montana IMG_1800.jpeg

Cheers to sitting around getting fat ! I’m gonna be going mental and and climbing the walls in the near future

My doctor said surgery MAY help, but he said it may open up Pandora's box also, at my age, then 70... My right shoulder was worse, but I could hardly put on my shirt or even adjust my ball cap. I opted out on the surgery and did some Thyerpay and took a shot in the right one.
20 months of rehab and its tolerabal, and I can shoot and carry my own gun. IT sucks when your body gets old, and your mind doesn't. It did make me build a gas-powered game cart...
Get a second opinion!

I have had both shoulders done...

Not only March Madness, but also Girl Scout Cookie Season...

I had my left shoulder worked on in Dec. 10 days later in the hospital shoulder is fine it was a bleeding ulcer. My December was totally in the toilet. Still in rehab and think it's almost there. But keep doing the rehab for the next year or so. Both shoulders have been replaced now. Getting old sucks.

I ended having most of what the OP had done almost 5-weeks ago. As seems to be my curse, once inside the surgeon found more things to repair. Recovery has been slow (at least for my impatient self). Still in a sling, getting range of motion back, but still unable to load up the muscles at all. Following the PT to a T+, so hopefully...

How is everyone feeling? @Little Big Man MT Chris @Brian in Montana

My right shoulder is scheduled for SLAP tear and labrum repair 04/30.
Back at work this week after 6 weeks off for recovery, been back at CrossFit easing back into hardcore training for hunting season

I did get into the whiskey 🥃 pretty good and put on a couple pounds being basically couch ridden for almost a month and the wife works nights home alone I visited buzz city a lot , should be able to drop the extra few pounds in the next month or so, I’m back on my strict eating and exercise routine which was my norm before surgery

Keep us posted on the surgery and recovery

Thought they sponsored a bill last year regarding Crossbows for archery season. Don’t know much about archery anyways, but maybe the draw lock could potentially work. I had spinal surgery 4 months ago. Listen to your doctor. I made some life style changes so I’m not a total Gimp when I’m 60. Excuse to tell my wife I need llamas or Mules.

Curious? What were your lifestyle changes?

I had 2 repairs and then a reverse replacement. I heal quick so my replacement did not cost me a hunting season. I was pulling a 60 lb bow in no time. I focused on stretching and elasticity, not strength.
I also watched lots of videos and learned better mechanics of pulling a bow back. Now my shoulder blades do a lot of the work.
I fired a couple of rifles within 2 months. That was too soon. No damage but some pain.

I had a doctor here in Missoula who did not diagnose my problems with my shoulders correctly. This is how it went. Rotator cuff torn left shoulder. Surgery and 5 months of PT. Didn't feel right so went back and had it looked at again. Yep torn again. Put that off and had surgery on my right shoulder. Same thing. Then back in for my left shoulder again, PT and failure again. Then back in for my right shoulder. Got an infection in my left shoulder a month after surgery and was in the next morning at 7:00 AM to have it opened up and cleaned out trying to get all of the infection removed. So far so good but was told the infection can lie dormant in there for years and then all of a sudden come back to haunt your ass again. Short story from 2017 to 2025 I had 5 surgeries on my left shoulder the last one being a reverse shoulder. That shoulder is as good as it's going to be, which isn't the best. Same time frame 3 shoulder surgeries on my right shoulder and I finally went to another doctor and had all my xrays and information sent to a third doctor also. They both said the same thing immediately is that you have this problem and this needs to be take care of before you have the shoulder repaired. Went to a different doctor here in Missoula and had a repair done on my right shoulder and then a few months later he went back in and did a reverse shoulder on it. 10 Surgeries in 8 YEARS on my shoulders, 5 on each!

In that same time frame I had my left hip replaced and my left knee. I just recently had my right hip replaced 2026. My take away from all of this.

I am angry at myself that I did not go to another doctor after 3 botched surgeries 2 left, 1 right. Everyone said this guy is the shoulder guy to go to, but they were wrong. If you have a bad outcome, it is NOT a horrible thing to get another opinion on what's went wrong after your surgery. If any of you fine people experience the kind of hell I went through go get a couple other opinions. It is your body and you want the best outcome that you can get. This is a big deal monetarily and mentally as well. You deserve the best treatment and outcome that you can get. I never bad-mouthed this first doctor really and kind of kept it to myself. Yes I have and still think about suing him. I have started sharing my story with folks I meet who have had surgeries in general conversation with them. I have found several others in just a short period of time since doing that who had horrible results from the SAME Doctor! Take care of yourself first and foremost.

Had a convo with my Ortho a couple of weeks ago. Rotator cuffs are the worst. The larger the tear and the older the patient, the higher the re-tear rate, which is HIGH at baseline. I'm putting mine off to see if I can avoid it. Good luck to all.
