Short barrel keeper loads??

It is very odd for me to not get an exit with a AB.

I shot a ram with a 160 accubond out of a 7rm at 3050 fps, broadside, no exit. It died yes. But I was unpleased with no exit for a tough bonded bullet. I switched to eldxs. I don't expect an exit with an eldx but more expansion/energy dump with a better BC. The last whitetail i shot at 30 yards with a 162 gr eldx at around 3150 did indeed get an exit hole. Broadside shot.

Better BC and a little more speed. I gained nothing from the accubond

I’m not convinced that there are short barrel and long barrel loads that universally shoot tighter in one or the other. Unless comparing a short barrel that used to be longer to how it used to be before the chop, guys are comparing barrel to barrel variances as much as length differences.

I’m getting 2850fps and 3000fps out of a 20” barreled 7-08 using 140 grain Accubond/Partitions and 120 grain Nosler ballistic tip(NBTs).

Bring this to the surface. I’m working on a 18” 7-08 for my daughter. Using Big Game I only got to 2720fps. I’ve got Staball 6.5, Varget, and N540 loaded up to test.

What powder got you to 2850?

Did you try any other powders? Varget doesn’t case fill at the published Max. Are you over to get to 2800fps?

Don’t have it anymore but I believe 42-43 grains. H4895 isn’t terrible but works better with lighter weights. Ramshot biggame and hunter were good. 7mm-08 isn’t a hard one to find a load for

I’m just concerned with it only hitting 2700ish with big game. Deer and antelope will be just fine, but I was hoping to be a bit faster.

I'm getting about 2725 out of 42gr of IMR 4064 with 140gr Sierras in an 18" 7mm-08. Just starting to get slightly flat primers, so I personally wont push too much further than that

I didn't change more than .3gr from 26" barrel, chopped to 24", then chopped to 20".

I’m just concerned with it only hitting 2700ish with big game. Deer and antelope will be just fine, but I was hoping to be a bit faster.

I think h414 would get you there but it’s not very temp stabile

Big Game is what I use with a WLRM primer with 140 grain Accubonds. Varget got me to 3000 fps with the 120s.

Tried N540 in the 7mm-08 with a 140g Accubond. In a 18” barrel it was the best by far at 2820 FPS and .75MOA. There is case room and I feel like there was room to explore more, but can’t complain about where it’s at.

Big Game & Staball 6.5 both were around 2700 to 2750 but showed pressure and had a fireball. The ladder was erratic with speed jumping high and low. The Staball may be better with a 150g bullet.

Varget was good but hit pressure too soon and only got to 2650 FPS.
